Admissions Directors Tell All - PA School Prerequisites As you probably know by now, if you want to get into PA school you must complete the necessary prerequisite coursework.

I have discussed this in detail in a previous post  Prerequisite Coursework: How to Design the Perfect Pre-PA School Curriculum .

Today, we are going a step further by giving you answers to some of the most common PA school prerequisite questions.

And the best part is:

These answers are directly from the PA school admissions committee themselves.

PA School Prerequisite Q&A

  1. Do You Look Down On Community College Prerequisite Coursework?
  2. Do PA School Prerequisite Classes Expire?
  3. Can I Apply With Coursework in Progress?
  4. Do My Prerequisite Courses Fulfill The Requirements?
  5. Do You Accept Online Prerequisite Coursework?
  6. Is There a Minimum GPA for Prerequisite Coursework?
  7. Do You Accept Prerequisite Courses Completed at Different Colleges?
  8. Is Lab Required?
  9. How About Repeat Courses?
  10. Graduate Or Undergraduate Courses?
  11. Dropped Courses?

The following are questions asked by pre-PAs as part of the annual Physician Assistant Education Association (PAEA) forum where ADCOMs from 30 top PA schools come together for a weekend and answer your questions. Schools such as Duke, Butler, Penn State College of Medicine, Yale, and Case Western Reserve (to name just a few).

Below you will find the question in bold with the answer given by the ADCOM (admissions committee) in blockquote. I have provided a summary of recommendations in yellow at the end of each section as well as an overall summary at the end of this post.

Got more questions or some helpful advice? Please let us know in the comments section.

1. Do You Look Down On Community College Prerequisite Coursework?

What is your take on applicants that take only one required course at a county college?

One or two community college courses is fine. The only time it becomes a concern is if ALL of your science or prereqs come from a community college, or there are multiple community colleges you have attended. – A.T. Still University

How do you view community college classes? Say if I take a prerequisite course at a community college, but it was a simple general education class such as sociology?

Community college classes are fine. We know many people do not have the resources to go back and take pre-reqs at four-year schools – Duke University

I took all my science classes at community college. Will that be a problem?

Having all of your science from a community college will be a weakness on your application. If you have some science courses at a 4-year university that will help, but having completed all your science classes at CC will be a negative factor. – A.T. Still University

If I do plan to retake some courses, does it matter if it’s at a local college or university? I can take some at the university level but others I can only retake at the college level because of financial hardship

You can complete coursework at any regionally accredited institution. This can include a community college or online as well. – Butler University

So long as the courses are completed at a regionally accredited institution, they will satisfy. It does not matter to us if they are from community college or a four year institution. We are aware of the significant costs for applicants and students alike and we encourage you to complete them in a way that is cost-effective and works for you. – Penn State College of Medicine

I took all of my prerequisites at the community college level. Would you suggest re-taking any at a University or would it be better to put my focus into improving other areas of my application such as patient care? How much of a negative impact does this hold? My GPA is strong, and I have significant volunteer hours.

In your case, I would not suggest retaking the courses. Yes, focus on your strengths so that you can offset the community college science courses. If you have an opportunity to take an upper-level science course at a 4-year university, you might consider that, but focus on the strong aspects of your application. It’s not a one-strike and you are done – the whole process is flexible and holistic. – A.T. Still University

I had a school tell me that because I took my last few courses at a community college that was held against me and that I was 3 of their scoring points away from an interview. How do you guys feel about that?

Upper division prerequisite requirements can be completed at a four-year institution, community college, or online courses from regionally accredited institutions. We do not look down on community college coursework. It will be factored in the same way – Penn State College of Medicine

Does your PA program accept prerequisites from Tri counties community college?

Yes, we will accept prerequisites from Tri C or other community colleges. – Case Western Reserve

Summary: Some schools do care if all of your prerequisites courses are taken at a community college, but the vast majority don’t. If you can, it is best to research your preferred PA school’s website and contact the program admission team.

2. Do PA School Prerequisite Classes Expire?

I would like to know if the prereq classes taken in undergrad in 2003 would be considered in factoring GPA or should I retake them. I can try to retake some at a university, but because of my financial situation, I can only afford community college courses. Will this be ok? Thanks

Courses you have taken do not expire for us. We will use your coursework from 2003 in our transcript review to determine which prerequisites are fulfilled. – Yale University

I completed my science classes in 2008, should I retake them?

If you’ve been working in healthcare full-time since graduating we would waive that requirement – Penn State College of Medicine

Do you accept a three-credit Humanities course if it was taken six years ago in 2011?

Yes, we will accept humanities credits that are older than 5 years. Only science credits must be taken within 5 years. – Touro University

My question is whether or not classes taken during undergrad “expire?” I graduated with a B.S in Biology in 2013 but started college in 2006. I was in the Air Force, so my undergrad took a long time to complete. As it stands, I am currently living as an Air Force dependent in Germany with my spouse while they finish their 4-year tour. I will not be applying to PA school for another three years. I was wondering since I will have been out of school for six years when I apply, will this hurt my application? I don’t know if the time since my classes were taken, will work against me?

The courses that “time out” are Anatomy and Physiology. That course series must be completed within 5 years of matriculation so you may need to refresh those courses. – Carroll University

I am a medical graduate from India applying for PA program. When you talk about GPA, is it the GPA of the prerequisite courses or the bachelor’s degree too? I received my bachelors in 1995 and have completed the prerequisites in the past two years. So which one counts more towards selection process?

The prereqs which must be completed within 10 years of applying count towards the selection process so we wouldn’t look at your 1995 coursework at all actually. – Case Western Reserve

I have a biology degree but graduated in 2002, are there any courses that your program wants to be more recent?

All of the prerequisites have to be completed within 10 years of applying to our program.  – Case Western Reserve

Do classes have an expiration date? Also, can I repeat some of the undergrad courses at a community college?

College credits do not expire. I only suggest retaking if you did very poorly in a prereq. Some students will take refresher courses or upper-level science to get back into “student mode” but remember, community college credits are not as rigorous as 4-year university credits. – A.T. Still University

I graduated with a BS in 2011, taking some core science classes in 2007. Since graduating, I have been working as a certified medical assistant and now working with CHC on the central coast. Would I need to retake the core classes?

No need to retake the prereqs. Having them completed more than 5 years ago is not ideal, but you have more recent coursework and clinical/volunteering to make up for it. So I suggest not worrying about retaking any courses unless you earned a C or below in one. – A.T. Still University

Summary: There is a surprisingly large amount of variation here between schools. Some schools do not have an expiration date on courses while others require all course be completed within a 10-year window and some require 5-year’s for certain courses and no expiration on others. This could open (or close) a lot of doors depending on when you completed your prerequisite coursework. Take home message: Do your research before you apply!

3. Can I Apply With Coursework in Progress?

I had taken Anatomy and Physiology (separate and both with their respective labs) over seven years ago. I will be retaking these courses next spring. Can I still apply during the upcoming cycle?

Yes, you can apply with coursework in progress, you would list it as either in progress or planned on the application. – A.T. Still University

Can I take biochemistry after submitting my application? If so, does not having taken this class reflect negatively on my application?

You can have three outstanding prerequisites at the time of application. You must show your plan to complete the courses prior to entering the program. It will not reflect poorly if you have not yet completed biochemistry – Butler University

Genetics is the only prerequisite I have not taken. Could my application still be reviewed considering I have additional classes that offer a more holistic approach to the medical field?

You can apply with one outstanding prerequisite (Genetics), however, if accepted you will need to prove you took the course by December 31st and passed with a B or better. – Yale University

Many programs only allow non-science courses to be “in progress.” Should I be worried that my Biochem will still be in progress when I apply? Should I wait to apply?

No more than two prerequisites can be outstanding at the time of application and they need to be done by the fall of the application year. – Case Western Reserve

Summary: The best bet is to try to have all your prerequisite coursework completed before you apply. If not, you better check with the PA program ADCOM, that being said, most schools allow one or two prerequisite courses to be outstanding at the time of application.

4. Do My Prerequisite Courses Fulfill The Requirements?

What do you accept for the human anatomy prerequisites? I attended Penn State University, where I have taken Biology 129, titled Mammalian Anatomy. I have also taken Biology 497, a human cadaver dissection course and I use the dissected cadavers to teach my section of the Biology 129 lab. So, the Biology 129 course is called Mammalian Anatomy, but it is primarily human-focused. Will these courses be sufficient for the human anatomy prerequisite? And if so, should I match both of them on the CASPA application?

Sometimes those need approval by our PA Chair on a case by case basis so if you have a question about a particular class I would email the chair and include a complete course description (and syllabus if you have it) so we can run that by the chair to get approval for you. – A.T. Still University

I have a question about some wording on your website concerning your prerequisite coursework. Per your website, the prerequisite biology classes must be “at or above the 200 level.” I have completed two combined anatomy and physiology courses with labs which are on par with what is usually required to apply. However, at my school, these were not listed as being at the “200 level”. Could you give any more information on this pre-requisite expectation?

We will look at your transcripts and if your courses are listed at the 200 level or higher in a biology related course then the course will count as fulfilling a prerequisite. – Butler University

Is it possible to substitute organic chemistry with biochemistry for the prerequisites?

We are not able to substitute Biochem for Organic Chem – Duke University

For the 2-semester psychology requirement, will neuroscience count? It is listed under the psychology department at my undergraduate university.

Neuroscience offered through your psychology departement will be accepted as one of the two psychology prereqs. – Carroll University

I was wondering if students that are applying would be able to designate which courses they would like used as prerequisites such as the choice between organic chemistry and biochemistry. Will the course with a higher grade automatically be used?

When you are asked to complete our secondary application, you will identify which courses you believe best satisfy our pre-requisites. We then verify these courses across your entire transcript. So my advice would be to best align your course with our course not necessarily take a course less appropriate just because it received a higher grade. As for OChem vs. Biochem – it absolutely is your choice – we require either – or….not both.  – Penn State College of Medicine

Could you please let me know the equivalent courses for biochemistry and organic chemistry or the course numbers?

The program does not endorse any one course or university/college at which to take prerequisite courses. We do accept either undergraduate or graduate level courses for biochem and organic but they must be separate courses and they must be specific to biochem and organic, not overview courses that combine lots of different topics. – Case Western Reserve

What are your thoughts on having endocrinology as an upper-level bio class compared to some of the other upper-level bio courses?

While endocrinology is not a prerequisite for Yale, certainly any upper-level biology courses will only help enhance your application and prepare you for a rigorous curriculum in a PA Program. – Yale University

Summary: Tap into your college and university academic advisor and make a plan. When I was in college I followed a pre-med track through my junior year until I discovered PA school. I met with my academic advisor who suggested I pursue a Zoology degree so that I could meet my genetics, microbiology, and anatomy/physiology prerequisites. I suggest you create a spreadsheet ( here is one I have started for you ) and compare prerequisite coursework across programs. When you meet with your advisor you can formulate your attack plan. If there are uncertainties, as I will say a million times, contact a couple PA programs and fill the gaps with knowledge!

5. Do You Accept Online Prerequisite Coursework?

I live in a small town where there is a private university and a community college. I still need to take couple prereqs and was thinking of taking them through UNE online courses, because the school in my town is so much more expensive than UNE. Would the UNE online courses be accepted as a prereq?

Online courses count as long as they are taken at a regionally accredited institution – Duke University

Can we take prerequisite courses online and attached lab on the campus?

Our requirement is that all prerequisite courses with labs must be taken “on ground.” – Case Western Reserve

Summary: Be careful with online courses, while many schools accept online classes, some school require that courses be taken on site. Again best to check before you decide to pursue an online degree.

6. Is There a Minimum GPA for Prerequisite Coursework?

If I have a C in one of my prerequisites, but my overall prerequisite GPA is a B would you suggest I retake that course?

It is difficult to say if you should retake the prerequisite, certainly the higher the better for your prerequisite GPA, so it may be to your benefit. – Yale University

So, your guys’ pre-requisite courses do not necessarily expire, but all prereqs must be met with a grade of a B?

The prerequisites do not have a grade minimum, but we calculate an overall prerequisite GPA.  If you are admitted to the program and have one outstanding course, you must complete the course by December 31st and earn a grade of B or better. – Yale University

Do you require all prereqs to be completed with a B or higher, or does your cumulative GPA just need to be a 3.0 or higher?

Your cumulative needs to be a 3.0 or higher. – Case Western Reserve

Summary: GPA requirements are the bane of many well-intended pre-PAs existences. It was definitely mine, and it is the one area where schools vary across the spectrum on requirements. I suggest you use a combination of tools starting with my paschoolfinder.com PA program match tool (where you can sort schools by overall and science GPA requirements) along with the PAEA Program Directory . Unless you have an overall and science GPA of 3.4 it is best to do your homework. If you are applying with a low GPA read this post to see what the ADCOMs have to say.

7. Do You Accept Prerequisite Courses Completed at Different Colleges?

I took Anatomy and Physiology 1 at one school and Anatomy and Physiology 2 at another. Will this affect my application?

No this does not impact your application from our standpoint – Penn State College of Medicine

Summary: Most schools just want to see that you have completed your prerequisites and maintained a relatively high standard. Having completed your prerequisites at different schools isn’t a big deal. If you have been to five different colleges in four years you may have some explaining to do but otherwise, in the words of Bobby McFerrin ” Don’t Worry Be Happy . “

8. Is Lab Required?

I noticed one of the prereqs is a physiology with a lab. How important is having this lab requirement? I have taken physiology without a lab and multiple anatomy classes with labs. I am also having trouble finding physiology lab classes to take separately.

Physiology lab is indeed a basic pre-requisite. We are strict about that. – Case Western Reserve

Summary: If the requirement says “lab” well then, you better have the lab. Most biology, physics, chemistry and anatomy/physiology courses have this as part of the course. This is not where you want to cut corners.

9 How About Repeat Courses?

Does repeated college courses give a bad impression of a student?

It depends on how many and what the trajectory of your studies look like.. Everyone has rough spots but the question is if its a pattern or if its an isolated instance with steady improvement thereafter. – Case Western Reserve

Summary: I think the admissions team at A.T Stills said it best in my post about applying to PA school with a low GPA : “We look for an upward trend in grades. We understand that some students have a hard transition to college, or they do not find focus until later. All of your grades will be averaged together, however, we still look for an upward trend. You do want to be somewhat close to the average GPA though. For example, if your total GPA is a 2.8, that is going to be hard to overcome. If it is a 3.0 or higher, with significant other experiences, we can work with that to an extent.”

10. Graduate or Undergraduate Courses?

Does your program factor graduate level work differently than undergraduate?

It does not.  – Case Western Reserve

Summary: CASPA calculates a GPA for your masters as well as undergrad coursework, schools look at both and take both into account. They are usually factored equally, but the trend (as always) matters.

11. Dropped Courses?

Do you take into account if you dropped a class then ended up retaking it later on? Will it essentially effect the application in any way?

We do consider if an applicant dropped a class and retook it later.  – Case Western Reserve

Summary: Of course schools will factor in dropped courses, they are looking for candidates who can handle the rigors of an intensive 2-3 year program. So you need to be careful here. If you drop a course and retake it scoring a 3.7 it isn’t going to look so bad. But lots of dropped course without good reason will not reflect highly.

Highlights and Summary

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly of CNA Classes

  • Facebook
  • Twitter

Training and working as a CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) is a unique opportunity that will allow you to see the true nature of the medical field. There can times of great pride and joy as a CNA, but you have to keep in mind that it is no easy task. If you feel that you may have what it takes, read on to see what you can expect from your CNA classes and training .

The Good

With the proper certification, training, and experience work as a CNA is one of the most secure job markets out there. There will always be a need for nursing assistants and there exists a wide range of possible career opportunities available to those with CNA training.

Many CNA classes offer flexible hours, or short training courses, in order to accommodate students. If you have a family life, another job, or are taking other classes, many CNA courses can be completed at a time or pace that suits you.

The Bad

Being a CNA can be a demanding job at times. There will always be those patients that get upset when you are trying to help them, but you must always remember what you are doing: helping them! They may not thank you, but you will feel better knowing that they are clean, comfortable and secure. Closely related to this, as well is the emotional nature of the job. As you work so closely with patients, however, there will be the chance that you will develop a close relationship and bond with those you treat. You will be thankful that you were able to make their lives that bit easier and more comfortable while you were with them, but the doesn’t mean it won’t be hard along the way. This is one of the most difficult and rewarding jobs you can take.

The Ugly

When you hear the term ‘nursing assistant’ there are a few images that may come to mind; some of which may not be pleasant. Working as CNA is not for those who are faint of heart. You will have a great deal of job satisfaction as a CNA, but you’ll have to deal with a few messes along the way. Everything in life comes at a cost, and one of the costs of becoming a CNA is seeing people at their worst. Bodily fluids, sadness from patients or their family, and high-pressure moments may occur on a regular basis. The work will be hard, and may not always be pretty, but there’s one thing we should never leave out. The impact you will make on your patients will be lifelong. While they may not remember you, you will always be able to appreciate that you helped someone for life.

The Best

If you are interested in pursuing a career in the medical profession, taking CNA classes can be an excellent way to learn about and understand all of the diverse areas of medical treatment and care. The work can be grueling, but the reward comes in two places. First, it comes from that fact that becoming a CNA includes a lot of job security and stability. Second, it comes from the fact that you’ve helped your patients along a difficult journey. You will have to take the good with the bad, and if you’re tough enough a career as a CNA can be more rewarding than anything else you would pursue.

5 Bad Habits to Avoid When Taking Online Classes

Online Degrees

There are a lot of advantages to taking classes online . While there may be occasions where you need to log in at a specific time to attend a lecture, do group work or watch a webinar, most of the time you can work on our classwork at any time of day. You get to work at your own pace. You don’t have to drive or walk to class. For many of us who juggle school and a full-time job, it’s a great way to get classwork to fit in your personal schedule. Yet along with these advantages, there are pitfalls. It can be easy to fall behind and more difficult to get help from your professor. When compared to a traditional classroom, it is just a different learning environment. There is less supervision and often less structure, which makes it easier to form bad habits – habits that could hinder your success in the class. Here are five bad habits to avoid when taking online classes .

1. Watching Television or Other Distractions While Studying

When you are physically in a class, there are others around you who are all paying attention (hopefully) to what the professor is teaching. Students are engaged and asking questions. Often in online classes, your classwork consists of reading or watching a lecture, and then writing and responding to discussion posts. It happens almost without you noticing it. You’re in your own personal space reading your class material. Then you quickly check your Facebook status or you have YouTube playing in the background or are catching up on the latest episode of your favorite show. Then your “class time” becomes a time suck. Suddenly your class material becomes the background. The studying that should have taken you an hour has now taken three hours and you really don’t remember what all of it was about. You wouldn’t bring Netflix or YouTube or Facebook into a conventional class, and you shouldn’t bring it into your virtual class either! Class time is class time.

2. Studying Whenever You Have the Time

The freedom that comes with being able to choose when you study can also be your downfall. You need to schedule and block out time each week for your class work. If you spend your week waiting for a free hour or two for study time to show itself, it’s never going to happen. If you don’t proactively schedule time, then likely you won’t have enough time to finish your work.

3. I’ll Just Log into the Class Once a Week

It’s important to remember that if you’re taking an online class, the only interaction you’ll have with your professor and other students is online. Login and check the information on your class at least once a day. You may find that the professor has added important information or changes to the classwork for that week or added clarification to something students didn’t understand. Make sure you know what is going on with your class.

4. I Didn’t Read the Syllabus

Remember that, since this is an online course, you will not have face time with your professor very often. The syllabus is an important part of an online course and you should refer to it regularly to make sure you are where you need to be in the course each week. It will tell you what you need to know and possibly even assignments you need to complete each week to stay caught up.

5. Discussion Posts are Dumb

Many online classes have a discussion board where you are asked to make posts and respond to posts each week on a particular topic. Often there is a stated minimum activity on the discussion board, such as a requirement to create one post on a particular topic or question and respond to two posts that other classmates have created. This is not a waste of time. It is the online equivalent of class discussion and class participation. It allows you to exchange ideas and questions with your classmates and gives the professor a way to assess how well you are grasping the material. It’s best to do more than the minimum suggested posts, so that you get the most out of your classroom participation time. For many online classes, participation in discussion posts is part of your grade for the class.

Online classes are convenient, and can be a great way to earn college credit. Avoiding these bad habits can help you be successful in your online class and help you avoid unnecessary stress.

Shakespeare’s Sonnets

by:
William Shakespeare

Sonnet 130

My mistress’ eyes are nothing like the
sun;
Coral is far more red than her lips’ red;
If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun;
If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head.
I have seen roses damask’d, red and white,
But no such roses see I in her cheeks;
And in some perfumes is there more delight
Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks.
I love to hear her speak, yet well I know
That music hath a far more pleasing sound;
I grant I never saw a goddess go;
My mistress, when she walks, treads on the ground:
And yet, by heaven, I think my
love as rare
As any she belied with false compare.

Summary: Sonnet 130

This sonnet compares the speaker’s lover to a number of
other beauties—and never in the lover’s favor. Her eyes are “nothing
like the sun,” her lips are less red than coral; compared to white
snow, her breasts are dun-colored, and her hairs are like black
wires on her head. In the second quatrain, the speaker says he has
seen roses separated by color (“damasked”) into red and white, but
he sees no such roses in his mistress’s cheeks; and he says the
breath that “reeks” from his mistress is less delightful than perfume.
In the third quatrain, he admits that, though he loves her voice,
music “hath a far more pleasing sound,” and that, though he has
never seen a goddess, his mistress—unlike goddesses—walks on the
ground. In the couplet, however, the speaker declares that, “by
heav’n,” he thinks his love as rare and valuable “As any she belied
with false compare”—that is, any love in which false comparisons
were invoked to describe the loved one’s beauty.

Sonnet 130 →

Commentary

This sonnet, one of Shakespeare’s most famous, plays an
elaborate joke on the conventions of love poetry common to Shakespeare’s
day, and it is so well-conceived that the joke remains funny today.
Most sonnet sequences in Elizabethan England were modeled after
that of Petrarch. Petrarch’s famous sonnet sequence was written
as a series of love poems to an idealized and idolized mistress
named Laura. In the sonnets, Petrarch praises her beauty, her worth,
and her perfection using an extraordinary variety of metaphors based largely
on natural beauties. In Shakespeare’s day, these metaphors had already
become cliche (as, indeed, they still are today), but they were
still the accepted technique for writing love poetry. The result
was that poems tended to make highly idealizing comparisons between
nature and the poets’ lover that were, if taken literally, completely
ridiculous. My mistress’ eyes are like the sun; her lips are red
as coral; her cheeks are like roses, her breasts are white as snow,
her voice is like music, she is a goddess.

In many ways, Shakespeare’s
sonnets subvert and reverse the conventions of the Petrarchan love
sequence: the idealizing love poems, for instance, are written not
to a perfect woman but to an admittedly imperfect man, and the love poems
to the dark lady are anything but idealizing (“My love is as a fever,
longing still / For that which longer nurseth the disease” is hardly
a Petrarchan conceit.) Sonnet 130 mocks
the typical Petrarchan metaphors by presenting a speaker who seems
to take them at face value, and somewhat bemusedly, decides to tell
the truth. Your mistress’ eyes are like the sun? That’s strange—my
mistress’ eyes aren’t at all like the sun. Your mistress’ breath
smells like perfume? My mistress’ breath reeks compared to perfume.
In the couplet, then, the speaker shows his full intent, which is
to insist that love does not need these conceits in order to be
real; and women do not need to look like flowers or the sun in order
to be beautiful.

The rhetorical structure of Sonnet 130 is
important to its effect. In the first quatrain, the speaker spends one
line on each comparison between his mistress and something else
(the sun, coral, snow, and wires—the one positive thing in the whole
poem some part of his mistress is like. In the
second and third quatrains, he expands the descriptions to occupy
two lines each, so that roses/cheeks, perfume/breath, music/voice,
and goddess/mistress each receive a pair of unrhymed lines. This
creates the effect of an expanding and developing argument, and
neatly prevents the poem—which does, after all, rely on a single
kind of joke for its first twelve lines—from becoming stagnant.

Shakespeare’s Sonnets

Shakespeare’s Sonnet 130: His Not So Fair Lady

Many men in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries composed sequences of sonnets about women whom they loved. William Shakespeare’s incomplete sonnet sequence is among the genre’s most acclaimed. Most authors embellished their women’s physical characteristics, but Shakespeare’s 130th sonnet states that his mistress lacks most of the qualities other men wrongly praise their women for possessing, such as eyes like the sun or lips as red as coral. While Shakespeare criticizes his lover’s physical traits, he believes his ³love as rare as any² and displays subtle disdain for relationships ³belied by false comparison.² Through this work Shakespeare tells the reader that true love recognizes imperfections and feels devotion regardless of flaws.

Like most of Shakespeare’s work, his 130th sonnet has meaning on several levels. First, he commentates on love as opposed to lust. A lustful man would focus on pleasing corporal characteristics, such as white breasts, red lips, and fragrant breath; however, Shakespeare’s women’s ³breast are dun,² her lips not nearly as red as coral, and her breath less delightful than many perfumes. Because Shakespeare recognizes her bodily shortcomings, he uses his…

Online MBA Programs in Texas

As the second most populated state in the U.S., Texas offers business and higher education opportunities in major cities like Dallas and Houston, as well as smaller but robust communities such as El Paso. Texas has enacted a plan for 60% of its population in the 25-34 age bracket to hold a higher education degree by 2030. Consequently, the state is investing in major universities, including the University of Texas and Texas AM. More than 25% of students in Texas’ postsecondary institutions take online classes. With its growing economy, commitment to higher education, and experience in digital learning, Texas is a great place for students to pursue an online MBA.

Why Consider an Online MBA in Texas?

Texas is home to 147 higher education institutions, ranging from small community colleges to major research universities. The state supports 36 public universities, including the University of Texas, the University of Houston, and Texas AM. Texas’ private colleges include national heavyweights like Baylor University as well as smaller schools like Abilene Christian University. Many of Texas’ higher education institutions cluster in major metropolitan areas such as Houston, Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio. Of these, Austin and Dallas have the highest cost of living while San Antonio has the lowest. Texas’ online MBA programs are available to all students regardless of location. Some online MBA programs in Texas require on-site coursework, in which case students should consider proximity.

For Texas residents, in-state education may be the most affordable option, especially at publicly supported schools. Most online MBAs in Texas offer financial aid packages though, and many employers help cover students’ fees. For admission to nearly any MBA program, students must have several years of professional experience. Traditionally, MBA programs also require applicants to submit Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) scores. Not all programs require standardized tests for admission today, however. Students should check about MBA admission requirements at their schools of interest.

MBA Concentrations for Texas Students

Students can pursue an online MBA in Texas in general business or focus their studies on a concentration. While students can benefit from any concentration, Texas residents find that concentrations in energy or cybersecurity offer especially lucrative opportunities. The state’s long history in oil and gas makes energy a job-rich sector. Since the field of cybersecurity is growing quickly across the country, large states like Texas offer many information security management jobs.

  • Energy: Both students interested in traditional fossil fuels and those seeking green alternatives can benefit from an MBA in energy-producing Texas. Graduates can secure jobs as project managers or energy consultants in this lucrative field.
  • Cybersecurity: Employers across all sectors are demanding information security professionals at a much higher rate than the current supply can provide. Cybersecurity experts with a managerial background find themselves particularly in demand.

Accreditation in Texas

Accreditation allows U.S.-based colleges and universities to validate their academic programs. Accrediting agencies review a school’s mission, financial stability, and faculty qualifications. The Department of Education authorizes accrediting agencies to grant either regional or national accreditation. In Texas, the Southern Association of Colleges Schools is responsible for regional accreditation.

Some accrediting agencies grant national accreditation to schools offering a specific degree or program. For instance, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business , the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs , and the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education accredit business schools. Ideally, students looking for an online MBA in Texas will find a school that holds both regional and national accreditation.

Texas Economy, Career, and Job Outlook for MBA Graduates

Texas is adding jobs at a nearly 2.5% rate , making it one of the fastest growing job markets in the United States. Part of that growth stems from the state’s long-time leadership in telecommunications and energy production. Texas is incentivizing small business development through the Texas Enterprise Fund, tax incentives, and state grants. State leaders particularly want to expand the biotechnology and life sciences industry since Texas is home to the Texas Medical Center, the nation’s largest medical complex. Manufacturing still ranks as the state’s primary business.

The Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan areas remain Texas’ most vibrant economic centers. Dallas and Fort Worth have a 3.4% unemployment rate , below the national average of 4.1%. Houston’s fastest growing employment sectors are manufacturing, education, and health services. San Antonio also offers a low 3.2% unemployment rate and a fast-growing mining industry.

How to Choose an Online MBA in Texas

There are many important considerations to make before settling on an online MBA program in Texas. These include factors discussed above like cost, accreditation, and available specializations. The following list includes some key steps to follow during the program research process for MBA options in any state.

  • Compare student outcomes data

Student outcomes include graduation rate, year-to-year retention rate, the average debt for a graduate from that school, and overall student satisfaction with their degree program. Student outcomes do not guarantee you will be satisfied with a particular program, but can be useful for pinpointing a school’s strengths and weaknesses.

  • Estimate the expected costs of your programs

Virtually every accredited college or university posts tuition rates online. Additionally, you should research other college-related costs like living accommodations and meal plans (if you plan to live on-campus), administrative fees, and technology fees (for online students). You should also look into scholarships, grants, and other forms of institutional financial aid that can offset some of the costs.

  • Check that classes will fit in with your schedule

Scheduling is critical for students with other important commitments, such as childcare or full-time employment. Many online programs are asynchronous, or self-paced; students in these tracks are free to complete course requirements on their own schedule. Synchronous programs, on the other hand, require weekly online meetings with teachers and fellow students.

  • Look for partnerships with local businesses

A large number of online MBA programs include internship and/or capstone practicum requirements ― and in many cases, students are able to gain on-the-job training and real-world office experience. You should look into the school’s business partnerships, particularly in regard to the industry you plan to enter after earning your MBA.

  • Make sure the program is accredited

Accreditation status should always be available and easily accessible on a school’s website. In addition to regional or national accreditation, some MBA pathways receive programmatic accreditation. Recognized programmatic accreditors for MBA programs include the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) and the International Accreditation Counsel for Business Education (IACBE).

  • Talk to current students and/or recent alumni

You should contact the alumni office at each school you are considering and ask to be connected with former students. These individuals can be good sources of information about education costs, life on- and off-campus, local business tips, and other important details for aspiring MBA students.

★Revising the Persuasive Essay: Thesis Supported by Evidence

Writing Thesis Statements for Argumentative Essays

Read the article below (on the left) about thesis statements and then do the interactive quiz on the right. Write only one word in each space.

Writing Thesis Statements for Argumentative Essays

Introduction

University writing often requires students to use persuasion: they need to convince readers of a logical viewpoint on a debatable subject. The thesis statement is usually one sentence in the essay’s introduction that clearly states the writer’s opinion and it often appears after some general background information about the issue. The thesis statement acts as a short summary of the writer’s stance in the debate, helping readers understand what will appear in the rest of the paper. Assignments may not state clearly whether a thesis statement is necessary, but if it asks you to take a position on an issue, analyze, interpret, compare and contrast or show cause and effect, you are probably expected to develop a persuasive thesis. (If you are not sure, it is wise to ask your instructor if the assignment requires a thesis statement.)

Developing a Thesis

Before you write a thesis statement, it is important to spend time reading academic articles to gather general background information about the issue. You need to evaluate the findings and arguments of different writers and decide which ones you think are the strongest and most convincing, which ones have the most credibility and which ones will help you write persuasively. Reading recent research will help you to decide your position and write a stronger, well-informed argument. Understanding and critically weighing others’ ideas will guide you towards developing a clear, logical and convincing thesis statement.

Thesis Statements: 4 points to remember

1. MAKE IT DEBATABLE

The first important point is that thesis statements must be debatable. (There is no point writing a persuasive argument if everyone already agrees!)

Example of an un-debatable thesis statement:

‘Drinking too much alcohol may cause health problems.’

This is weak because it would be very difficult to build a persuasive argument that drinking too much alcohol would not cause health problems: most people (and doctors) already agree that it would.

Example of a debatable thesis statement:

‘Alcohol should contain warning labels about the possible dangers of over-drinking.’

This is debatable because people can agree or disagree with the proposal. Some might agree that alcohol labels should contain warnings about the dangers of drinking while others may feel that warning labels would be ineffective as they would not stop people from drinking. Therefore, it is a good thesis statement.
The first point to remember then is that thesis statements must provide room for disagreement and debate.

2. MAKE IT SPECIFIC

Thesis statements should be specific, not general. The following thesis statement is too general:

‘Drinking alcohol is harmful.’

This statement is too broad and unfocused because it does not specify:

*Who drinking alcohol harms
*What drinking alcohol harms
*What the main reasons are that make drinking alcohol harmful

Asking specific ‘Wh’ questions can help narrow your focus and make your paper more manageable.

The following thesis statement is more persuasive because it is focused:

‘Alcohol consumption may negatively impact university students’ GPA.’

As this statement provides specific answers to the questions above, it significantly narrows the possibilities that the writer can write about and provides a clear focus for the entire argument.

Here are two more examples of focused thesis statements:

‘A four-year university programme is better than a three-year one because students have more time for deeper learning.’
‘Hong Kong will not become a world class city until it tackles its air pollution problem.’

The second point to remember then is that a thesis statement should be specific.’

3. HAVE ONLY ONE CONTROLLING ARGUMENT

As you can see from the examples above, a good thesis statement has only one controlling (main) argument:

‘Alcohol should contain warning labels about the possible dangers of over-drinking.’
‘Alcohol consumption may negatively impact amongst university students’ GPA.’
‘A four-year university programme is better than a three-year one because students have more time for deeper learning.’
‘Hong Kong will not become a world class city until it tackles its air pollution problem.

It is important that your thesis statements also contain only one controlling argument. Supporting details can be discussed in depth later in the essay’s body paragraphs that follow the introduction.

4. MAKE IT CLEAR AND CONCISE

As you can see, good thesis statements use clear language and not too many words. It is important that your thesis be clear so that your readers know exactly what your position is. There should be no confusion, such as in the following poor example:

‘Many people from around the world have different opinions about whether teenagers under eighteen years of age should be able to get a driving license and drive a vehicle or not and I tend to agree with some of them but not with others.’

This example is poor for a number of reasons. First, it is too long and ‘wordy’ (it uses too many unnecessary words which can be omitted). Second, the opinion of the writer is not clear to the reader. A better example of a thesis would be:

‘Teenagers under eighteen years of age should not have driving licenses as most are not mature enough to handle the responsibility of driving.’

This thesis statement is much better as the writer’s position is very clear, and uses a minimal number of words. Clear and concise should be your goal in all writing, but it is especially important when writing a thesis statement.

Summary

Remember! When you include a thesis statement in your introduction that is…

1. debatable
2. specific
3. has only one main argument
4. is clear and concise

…your essay will be focused and your reader will know exactly what to expect in the body paragraphs that follow your introduction. With a little practice, you can write high quality thesis statements that bring focus to all of your argumentative essays.

Now do the interactive activities on the right.

  1. In which paragraph is the thesis statement normally found?
  2. What is another word for ‘argumentative’?
  3. The first step before writing a thesis statement is to _________ expert, academic articles to gather background information.
  4. When you __________ the arguments and findings of academic articles on the issue that you will write about, you will begin to choose those that are most credible and persuasive.
  5. Reading academic articles on the issue that you will write about will help you decide your __________.
  6. The first main point to remember about writing a thesis statement is to make it ___________.
  7. A good thesis statement should always leave room for _________.
  8. Another main point is that thesis statements need to be ___________. They should not be too broad or general.
  9. Writing specific thesis statements helps to narrow the possibilities that the writer will write about and provide _________ to the essay.
  10. A good thesis statement should not have more than ___________ controlling argument.
  11. ____________ details should be discussed in the body paragraphs that follow the introduction.
  12. Another key idea is that a thesis statement should always be very ___________ so that readers can identify the writer’s position on the issue.
  13. A thesis statement should also always be as ____________ as possible. Using too many words may confuse or annoy readers.
  14. If an introduction has a clear, concise and debatable thesis statement with only one controlling idea, readers will be able to identify the writer’s point of view and know exactly what to __________ from the essay before they read its body paragraphs.

    Election 2016: The International Issues

This essay is one piece of a two-part overview of the issues facing America’s next president. Read about the domestic challenges here .

From Russia to North Korea to the slaughter in Syria, the next president will face foreign-policy challenges that test the very fundamentals of world order.

In recent months, RAND researchers have outlined the decisions that must be made, the dangers involved, and the least-bad options that now often pass for good ones. They have assessed the fight against ISIS, developed a peace plan for Syria, and mapped a future for the world economy.

Senior political scientist Michael J. Mazarr set the scene in a recent op-ed . “U.S. foreign policy over the coming decade,” he wrote, “is likely to focus on the task of managing relations among a collection of tough, ambitious great powers that are determined to shift at least some of the global balance of power away from the United States.”

The Islamic State has been driven from some of its most important cities and now finds itself under siege in others. But defeating it on the battlefield is only the first step in what will be a long fight to dismantle what it stands for.

Western perceptions of the Islamic State as the command-and-control hub of an international terror corporation are misguided. Instead, it is a three-part threat , RAND experts wrote: the self-declared caliphate itself; its franchisees in places like Libya and Nigeria; and its ideology, open-sourced for anyone to claim.

The coalition fighting ISIS on the ground has made great strides since senior international policy analyst Linda Robinson traveled through the region in the early months of the campaign. She found that the local forces on the front lines were, with some exceptions, fragmented, outgunned, and unprepared to reliably hold ground. Her recommendations, that the United States and its partners provide significantly more training and equipment to those local fighters, have since become strategy.

ISIS’s opponents on Arabic-language Twitter outnumber its supporters, six to one.

Success in the fight against ISIS will require further developing those local fighters into competent hold forces, she said, as well as establishing effective governance in Iraq and Syria.

But as an ideology, ISIS is only the symptom of a disease, not the underlying cause, senior policy analyst Andrew Liepman and political scientist Colin P. Clarke wrote. The coalition still must address the social and political forces that gave rise to ISIS, such as vicious sectarian divisions in Iraq and the civil war in Syria.

There is reason for optimism in an unlikely place. ISIS may be known for its deft use of social media, but a recent RAND analysis found that its opponents on Arabic-language Twitter outnumber its supporters, six to one . They could represent a potent force in the fight against the idea of ISIS.

    Syria: A Practical Peace Plan

The United States can no longer afford to wait for a comprehensive political settlement to bring an end to the bloodletting in Syria. Its principal goal, at least for now, should be to establish and sustain an enduring ceasefire , even if that means postponing a decision on the homicidal regime of President Bashar al-Assad.

That is the only practical way to end the fighting, a team of RAND experts led by former ambassador and special envoy to Afghanistan James Dobbins concluded.

Their peace plan would freeze the conflict along existing battle lines , effectively dividing Syria into several semi-independent zones—one controlled by the regime, one or more by the Arab opposition, and another by the Kurds. At least some state authority would devolve to those groups, allowing them to govern the areas they now hold, with international oversight.

For now, America’s main goal in Syria should be to establish and sustain an enduring ceasefire.

A fourth zone, the vast and desolate east of Syria, would remain a free-fire zone. There all sides could turn their attention to the destruction of a common enemy, the Islamic State.

A durable ceasefire would at least buy negotiators time to work out the future shape of a Syrian state—and the fate of the Assad regime—without the running clock of a daily body count. Anything else risks making “’the best’ (that is, Assad’s removal) the enemy of ‘the good’ (maintaining the ceasefire),” the RAND experts wrote—and ending up with the worst, a resumption of violence with no realistic plan to stop it.

Refugees: Lessening the Risk of Radicalization

As millions of displaced Syrians crowded into desert camps and urban slums, RAND researchers sought to better understand the forces that pushed former waves of refugees into the arms of radicals .

Their study of more than half a dozen previous refugee crises, from Asia to Africa to the Middle East, identified several common threads that seem to lead toward greater risk of radicalization. They found, for example, that refugees kept in isolated camps, with little opportunity for work or education and little sense of security, have been especially vulnerable to infiltration by militant groups.

Those findings provide a guide to the international community as it struggles to accommodate refugees now and in the future in a way that lessens the risk of radicalization. Host countries, in particular, should allow refugees some freedom of movement, provide adequate security, and establish opportunities for youth beyond primary school.

Critical to those efforts, of course, is international support and funding that doesn’t wane as a refugee crisis drags into years.

Some of that funding could support local businesses that employ both refugees and non-refugees, said senior political scientist Barbara Sude , the study’s lead author. That would improve the lives of people on both sides and strengthen the ties between their communities— all good defenses against the threat of radicalization.

Sixty hours. In repeated war games at RAND , sixty hours is all it took Russian forces to punch through NATO’s thin defenses in eastern Europe and reach the capitals of Estonia or Latvia.

It may seem unlikely that Russian President Vladimir Putin would risk war with NATO, senior research analysts David A. Shlapak and Michael Johnson wrote. But, as their games showed, the potential consequences if he did are so dire that it “may be less than prudent to allow hope to substitute for strategy.”

Both NATO and the United States have announced stepped-up troop rotations in eastern Europe, a good first step at reinforcing deterrence. But RAND’s research concluded that NATO would need a force of about seven brigades—including three heavy armored brigades— on the ground, properly supported and backed by air power, to fundamentally change the strategic equation for Moscow.

If Putin risked war with NATO by invading the Baltics, the potential consequences would be dire.

That would represent a small part of overall spending of NATO member countries, Shlapak and Johnson wrote. Without further strengthening its eastern flank, they added, NATO will remain outnumbered, outranged, and outgunned.

At the same time, the United States should look for ways to engage Russia , Mazarr wrote. There are areas for mutual cooperation, he noted, such as counterterrorism and nonproliferation. Russia aspires to a respected position in the world order, he wrote—not “the role of hated troublemaker.”

    North Korea: The Wild Card

An underground explosion in rural North Korea in early September rattled seismographs in South Korea and homes fifty miles away in China. It was North Korea’s most powerful nuclear test to date, the latest escalation in one of the world’s most dangerous guessing games.

This year alone, the erratic regime of leader Kim Jong-Un has test-fired more than 30 ballistic missiles, sent a rocket into space in what was widely seen as another missile test, and detonated two nuclear bombs. Those tests show that the North is determined to advance its weapons programs and the threat they pose, even in the face of ever-tightening international sanctions, senior defense analyst Bruce W. Bennett wrote.

North Korea’s nuclear tests call into question the long-standing U.S. approach of “strategic patience.”

The tests also call into question the United States’ long-standing approach of “strategic patience” with North Korea, Bennett wrote. The U.S. sent two B-1 bombers over South Korea in a display of resolve after the September nuclear test, and has moved to deploy an advanced missile-defense system there.

The quickening pace of provocations from the North this year suggests a weak leader feeling more and more internal pressure, Bennett wrote—and seeking to divert attention through displays of force. That raises another troubling question for the international community: What would happen if the North Korean regime collapses?

That could plunge parts of the North into anarchy, leave its weapons of mass destruction exposed, and threaten civil war in a country with more than one million military and security personnel, Bennett said. At the same time, it would likely cut off food distribution, provoking a humanitarian disaster “even more serious than is normally the case in North Korea,” he said.

Nearly 40,000 unaccompanied children, fleeing poverty and violence in Central America, made the treacherous journey to America last year and were stopped at the border. Even more have been coming this year.

The United States is working with the governments of El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala to slow the exodus by stimulating economic growth, promoting education, and targeting criminal networks. But more needs to be done on this side of the border , senior policy researcher Daniel M. Gerstein and associate sociologist Ernesto F. L. Amaral wrote.

Given the numbers and the need, the most relevant question for policymakers may be how to best integrate those children allowed to stay into American society. U.S. officials should better monitor how children fare in their host families, in their schools, and in their communities, Gerstein and Amaral wrote.

History has repeatedly shown the futility of building “impenetrable” border walls to keep people out.

More broadly, America needs to streamline its immigration court system, with more judges to hear more cases in less time, Gerstein wrote in a separate paper. It also should invest in better technologies to secure the border and target suspect air and sea cargoes as well as individuals.

A wall across the southern border— “a thin brittle line,” in Gerstein’s words—would only divert money and resources from those needed reforms. The evidence of history, he wrote, from the Great Wall of China to the French Maginot Line, has repeatedly shown the futility of building “impenetrable” barriers to keep people out.

    Trade: Adapt and Integrate

International free-trade deals may have few friends in presidential politics, but they could strengthen economies at home and abroad as the world adapts to some 21st-century realities.

America will remain the dominant player in the world economy for the foreseeable future. But it will have to accommodate rising world powers like China, as well as developing nations whose economies are growing while those of America’s closest allies slip.

The United States stands to gain more from strengthening world economic institutions and rules —and engaging with those rising powers— than from pulling back, senior economist Howard J. Shatz wrote. Despite the rhetoric, trade and investment deals represent valuable tools in that effort—measured both in domestic dollars and cents and in the expansion of the world economy.

The United States should strive to maintain and strengthen the global system of trade it helped create.

Because of that, the United States should approve some version of a Pacific trade and investment agreement, Shatz concluded—and include an on-ramp for China to join. The U.S. also should sign a new trade and investment agreement with Europe to help restore growth there and benefit both economies.

This is a decisive moment for the world economy. The United States should strive to maintain and strengthen the global system of trade it helped create—“spurring growth so lives are improved,” Shatz said, “and demonstrating to countries that a U.S.-led economic system is a desirable one in which to participate.”

Conflict takes many forms. Hot wars, cold wars, trade wars. Battles in cyberspace and for hearts and minds. Tensions between individuals and clashes of civilization. Conflict is as old as humanity, but peace is possible. Training in international affairs and policy builds a critical foundation of expertise to recognize the underlying cultural, economic, social, and political forces at work in the world. It challenges students to develop communications, leadership, and teamwork skills. An interdisciplinary curriculum and a rich community of people with which to study bring differing ideas together. Graduates are distinguished by their flexibility and adaptability. They can separate facts from opinions. Over 40 schools in international affairs, public policy and global business now featured in our Graduate School Forum.

Admission Requirements for Study in Canada, Canadian Universities, Application Process, procedure, eligibility criteria for study in canada for mba, bachelors. The Edexcel GCE Biology specification represents two approaches leading to the same learning outcomes. By the end of the course the students will have covered the same biology, and there is one common assessment structure. Both courses are assessed through interesting coursework, and examination questions referring to biological contexts, applications and practical work. There is a limit to how much context can be included in an exam question anyway, as you just add too much to the reading required. See Edexcel biology specification for 2008 Revision tips for students from Nicola Wilberforce of Esher College These revision tips are only relevant for the SNAB context-based version of the Edexcel GCE Biology course. They require access to the resources on this same text to give to students. There are revision guides published for SNAB (that is, for Edexcel GCE Biology) and for many students they can provide a ‘comfort blanket’, giving a sense of security. However, beware – revision guides can encourage passive rote-learning whilst giving the impression that you are understanding. Many biology exam questions ask you to apply your knowledge to new situations and problems.

NYSE National is the New York Stock Exchange’s newest equities exchange, which aims to deliver greater choice to investors.

NYSE National is a fully electronic market that combines the high performance of NYSE Pillar technology with a “taker/maker” fee schedule. With the highest exchange rebates available for removing liquidity, NYSE National is an attractive trading venue for investors using fee-sensitive strategies to take liquidity or for passive traders seeking to minimize their time-to-fill.

NYSE National uses the same order entry/market data protocols and order types as NYSE Arca, allowing for easy adoption by the trading community. Additionally, it offers an aggressive introductory fee schedule to encourage participation, including free membership and proprietary market data.

Tracing its history back to 1885 to when it was the Cincinnati Stock Exchange, it later became the world’s first stock exchange to become a fully automated, screen-based trading system in 1985. It is fitting that in its new life as NYSE National that it operates on the NYSE’s state-of-the-art trading system, NYSE Pillar .

On the surface I think I am like most young and modern American women: I take school seriously, I have dreams and goals for the future that I am determined to make happen, and I don’t expect anyone to do the hard work for me. I come from what is an increasingly normal background: my parents are divorced and I live with my mom and sisters and only occasionally see my dad since he now lives on the other side of the country, but I still feel very lucky to have a supportive, if spread out, family behind me. What makes me different from the rest of the crowd though is how I choose to fill my time away from school…

Sometimes a task can seem monumental when you try to visualize the entire thing, but if you break it down into smaller goals suddenly it can become manageable. When I first started to consider going to college so that I could make a better life for myself and my daughter, I thought it was going to be almost impossible. I was working in a convenience store trying to make ends meet as a single mother, but I just knew that there was something more out there for me…

My father always used to say to me: “if you want people to respect you, first you must respect yourself”. At this juncture in my life I see going back to school to earn a degree in nursing as a symbol of respecting myself and the goals I have set for myself. I have made sacrifices in my life that are common for many women: putting my husband’s career before my own, and my child’s life and growth before my own as well, and for many years these sacrifices have been worthwhile…

I was born and raised primarily in Medellin, Colombia, which is a land rich in beauty, but sadly for many of the people living there it is also a land of where poverty is a way of life. I am one of the few lucky ones who has never had to suffer the pains of an empty stomach, or had to struggle to make a living off the land with little or no education to back up my choices. However, if called upon to find a people with a better disposition or more welcoming spirits than those same indigenous people I grew up near, one would be very hard pressed…

Job Application Tip: Should The Cover Letter Be an Attachment or Body of The Email?

Unlike the old days where one was required to seal applications in an envelope, job applications now have to be done through emails. This has left some people confused as to how online job applications are done.

An example is whether to attach the application letter or to put it as the body of the email.

Speaking to  Perminus Wainaina a Recruitment Manager at Corporate Staffing Services he confirms that a cover letter should be the body of the email and that at the same time it should be sent as an attachment.

“Sending a job application with the cover letter as the body of the email saves time for the employer as it’s easy to scroll through the letter as opposed to first downloading it and then reading it ,” says Mr. Wainaina

He adds that, A cover letter should be enticing enough for the employer to want to open the attached CV. No employer wishes to open something boring or too lengthy; that’s why it should be brief. It is important for job seekers to note that the cover letter should not be a copy paste of your CV.”

He also notes that the attached letter serves the filling purposes incase future reference is needed as it can be downloaded and printed. The printed quality of the download is better than that of the body of the email.

Who should you address your application to?

“Job applicants should follow instructions given in the job advert. But just in case it’s not indicated to whom the applications should be addressed to, ‘Dear Sir/ Madam’ will work fine,” advices Mr. Wainaina

What do you indicate on the subject line?

Mr. Wainaina’s take on this is that, “Most job adverts indicate what should appear on the subject line of the email, some may tell you to indicate the position being applied for or the job reference number in the subject line. If it is not indicated I would recommend they go with the job title, use it as your subject line.”

“I have also seen very catchy subject lines that made me want to have a look at some applications. An example is ‘why I should be considered for this job’, others is the use of capital letters to make sure that the application catches the employers attention,” says Mr. Wainaina

Is there a recommended or standard font for the body of the email?

Mr Wainaina says that, “There is no standard font that’s stipulated for making job applications but I recommend Times New Roman as its simple and it also look looks official.”

Incase you were wondering how to make that job application, now you know.

            1. thanks so much. I have been having a confusion on whether to attach my cover letter or not, now I KNOW. The who to address has also been an issue, now it isn’t. what to appear on subject line if not specified has challenged me many times, now henceforth it wont.
