As in most MMORPGs, the general power and effectiveness of your character is dependent on their skills/abilities and attributes/stats. These factors in turn are influenced by a host of other systems that may also interact with each other, such as character level, talents, equipment, and divine spirits.
This is not meant to provide an exhaustive in-depth discussion of all of these features (for some of them, there are dedicated guides), but rather a starting off point for newer players wanting to get to know the peculiarities of character development in ASTA .
As mentioned above, your character’s stats are one of the main factors determining the power in-game. Other than skills (see below), their effects are always passive and applied automatically to your character.
There are 4 primary stats, and a whole range of secondary stats:
1. Primary stats: These 4 stats (Attack, HP, Critical, and Energy) are defined by the ability of players to increase them directly when levelling up or using stats enhancement (see below).
2. Secondary stats: Are influenced by your primary stats, equipment, talents, and divine spirits.
Both primary and secondary stats can be altered through temporary effects from skills and consumables (buffs & debuffs).
In general, different classes and their different talent specializations will prioritize different stats (both primary and secondary) over others, and it will not be possible for you to simply push all of them to the maximum. You will need to carefully choose what you want your character to focus on, and how you want to play your character. This is usually referred to as the “character build”. Refer to the class guides to get a more detailed overview regarding the strengths, weaknesses and roles of the different character classes in ASTA .
Relatively few of the secondary stats are displayed as absolute values, but rather as percentage chances / increases / decreases that it turn affect other values, such as an %-increase in critical hit damage or a %-chance to dodge an enemy attack. However, you can often see the absolute values on which the percentages of secondary stats are based, when you hover your mouse cursor over a secondary stat (only possible in the character information window, not the ancillary “Stat Details” window).
Skills are active abilities that your character can use when prompted. They are dependent on your character class and level, and most skills will also have distinct skill levels, getting stronger the more they advance. New skill levels are learned automatically as your character levels up.
Knowing which skills to use at which time and in which situation is absolutely critical in order to play your character effectively. Using skill consumes “Mana Points” (symbolized by the blue bar in your character unit frame), so you will not be able to use skills continuously and have to make sure that you do not run out of mana mid-fight.
Many skills also cannot be used in quick succession, forcing you to wait a certain amount of time between uses (referred to as “Cool-down”). Finally, skills are also divided by their range (most commonly referred to a “Melee” and “Ranged” skills), as well as what kind of targets they can affect. Some skills can be casted on yourself and/or your allies, while others can only be used against opponents. Make sure to carefully check the description for each skill so you know what it does.
Levelling your character is one of the most common and easy to understand ways of advancing your character. Your character earns experience points (EXP) for performing certain actions in-game such as killing monsters and completing quests. Once sufficient experience points have been accumulated, your character advances to the next level:
When levelling up, your character’s maximum health and mana points are increased, and any skill levels associated with your new character level are learned automatically. Levelling up your character also allows you to access contents with specific level requirements, such as quests, areas, divine spirits, or equipment items.
You will also receive some attribute & talent points that you can freely distribute in order to further specialize your character.
Talents allow you to further modify your skills and attributes as well as gaining new active skills to use, thereby specializing your character to perform a particular role better. Similar to skills they are specific to your character class, though each class has two different types of talent specializations, often referred to as “talent trees”. Use the menu bar in the bottom right or the default hotkey “N” to open up the talent window and view your character’s (or rather class’) talent specializations:
Starting with level 10, your character will gain a talent point every time they level up. These points can then be manually allocated to a talent of your choosing. At the top of the talent window, you can see your available talent points. To allocate a point to a specific talent, simply left-click on it. Talents can have multiple ranks, shown right underneath their icon, meaning you can allocate up to 5 points for a given talent in order to further boost its effect.
Once you are done allocating your points, use the “Save” button at the bottom to permanently assign the points. Using the “Restore” button resets all allocated (but not yet saved) points. No need to worry should you ever feel like you have taken up the wrong talent(s) or would like to try out a different build after all: You can reset your talent points at any Drill Instructor NPC for a small gold fee.
Please be aware that not all talents in a specialization are immediately accessible. Going from top to bottom, the talents further down the “talent tree” will only become available when a character has already allocated a certain amount of talent points in that tree. Thus, the further down a talent is, the later in the game it will become accessible. You can see the amount of points required for a talent to unlock in its tooltip:
This also means it is not always necessary or the best solution to acquire all ranks of a given talent, as you take up some talents for the sole purpose of unlocking higher-tier talents.
As mentioned above, you may want to adjust your attribute distribution & preferences depending on which talents you acquire. It is recommended that you experiment with different talent specializations and attribute distributions, in order to find a “build” that feels effective and suits your preferred playstyle and content focus (e.g. PvP-focused).
To that end, it is also possible to unlock 2 additional “builds”. To do so, click on one of the + symbols in the top right corner of the talent window. A confirmation window will appear where you can purchase an additional build slot for a certain amount of Soul Stones.
“Equipment” (also sometimes referred to as “gear”) refers to any items that your character wears, such as armor, jewelry, weapons, and cores. You can view your character’s equipment in the character information window (default hotkey “C”):
Equipment is obtained from looting killed opponents, from quest rewards, and via crafting, and is mainly used to passively increase secondary stats such as critical hit rating, attack power, or damage resistance.
As mentioned above, a lot of equipment items will have a character level requirement and cannot be worn by characters below that level.
Equipment is also set apart from the other features mentioned here by the fact that you can lose the benefits of equipment items if they get damaged too much and break. Keep an eye on your equipment’s durability (displayed in the item tooltip) and make sure to frequently repair your equipment so you won’t have any bad surprises mid-fight!
Stats Enhancement is a feature unique to ASTA . It allows you to further increase your character’s 4 primary attributes, using a slot machine type interface.
You can access it from the Character Information window (default hotkey “C”), by clicking the “Enhance” button in the bottom right corner. There is a limit to how many extra attribute points you can gain through stats enhancement, depending on your character level (character level * 10), and it’s also possible to lose points when using stats enhancement.
The system becomes usable at level 2 and at that point, you will get a dedicated tutorial for the system.
Divine Spirits are the second feature unique to the character progression in ASTA . We will only give a very brief overview of the system here, as there is a lot to it and we have a dedicated gate on the topic. Divine Spirits are unlocked at level 5, and you can access them in the Divine Spirits window (from the Character menu or by using the default hotkey “U”).
Divine Spirits can be compared to equipment (see above), as you have a limited amount of slots (the current maximum is 10), to which you can assign Divine spirits to passively increase your attributes. Unlike regular equipment items however, Divine Spirits can only increase one attribute, and while there are different types of Divine Spirits, each type can be slotted into any slot (though you can only have one Divine Spirit of each type equipped).
Divine Spirits are also always bound to your account (meaning they cannot be traded to other players), and have a level, similar to characters themselves.
Consumables are not considered a substantial part of your character development, as they usually provide only temporary effects affecting your primary & secondary stats. The term refers to all kinds of potions or similar items that are consumed on use and provide a certain beneficial effect upon use.
This can range from restoring your character’s health to increasing a specific attribute for a certain amount of time to resetting your character’s talent points.
