Admissions Directors Tell All - PA School Prerequisites As you probably know by now, if you want to get into PA school you must complete the necessary prerequisite coursework.

I have discussed this in detail in a previous post  Prerequisite Coursework: How to Design the Perfect Pre-PA School Curriculum .

Today, we are going a step further by giving you answers to some of the most common PA school prerequisite questions.

And the best part is:

These answers are directly from the PA school admissions committee themselves.

PA School Prerequisite Q&A

  1. Do You Look Down On Community College Prerequisite Coursework?
  2. Do PA School Prerequisite Classes Expire?
  3. Can I Apply With Coursework in Progress?
  4. Do My Prerequisite Courses Fulfill The Requirements?
  5. Do You Accept Online Prerequisite Coursework?
  6. Is There a Minimum GPA for Prerequisite Coursework?
  7. Do You Accept Prerequisite Courses Completed at Different Colleges?
  8. Is Lab Required?
  9. How About Repeat Courses?
  10. Graduate Or Undergraduate Courses?
  11. Dropped Courses?

The following are questions asked by pre-PAs as part of the annual Physician Assistant Education Association (PAEA) forum where ADCOMs from 30 top PA schools come together for a weekend and answer your questions. Schools such as Duke, Butler, Penn State College of Medicine, Yale, and Case Western Reserve (to name just a few).

Below you will find the question in bold with the answer given by the ADCOM (admissions committee) in blockquote. I have provided a summary of recommendations in yellow at the end of each section as well as an overall summary at the end of this post.

Got more questions or some helpful advice? Please let us know in the comments section.

1. Do You Look Down On Community College Prerequisite Coursework?

What is your take on applicants that take only one required course at a county college?

One or two community college courses is fine. The only time it becomes a concern is if ALL of your science or prereqs come from a community college, or there are multiple community colleges you have attended. – A.T. Still University

How do you view community college classes? Say if I take a prerequisite course at a community college, but it was a simple general education class such as sociology?

Community college classes are fine. We know many people do not have the resources to go back and take pre-reqs at four-year schools – Duke University

I took all my science classes at community college. Will that be a problem?

Having all of your science from a community college will be a weakness on your application. If you have some science courses at a 4-year university that will help, but having completed all your science classes at CC will be a negative factor. – A.T. Still University

If I do plan to retake some courses, does it matter if it’s at a local college or university? I can take some at the university level but others I can only retake at the college level because of financial hardship

You can complete coursework at any regionally accredited institution. This can include a community college or online as well. – Butler University

So long as the courses are completed at a regionally accredited institution, they will satisfy. It does not matter to us if they are from community college or a four year institution. We are aware of the significant costs for applicants and students alike and we encourage you to complete them in a way that is cost-effective and works for you. – Penn State College of Medicine

I took all of my prerequisites at the community college level. Would you suggest re-taking any at a University or would it be better to put my focus into improving other areas of my application such as patient care? How much of a negative impact does this hold? My GPA is strong, and I have significant volunteer hours.

In your case, I would not suggest retaking the courses. Yes, focus on your strengths so that you can offset the community college science courses. If you have an opportunity to take an upper-level science course at a 4-year university, you might consider that, but focus on the strong aspects of your application. It’s not a one-strike and you are done – the whole process is flexible and holistic. – A.T. Still University

I had a school tell me that because I took my last few courses at a community college that was held against me and that I was 3 of their scoring points away from an interview. How do you guys feel about that?

Upper division prerequisite requirements can be completed at a four-year institution, community college, or online courses from regionally accredited institutions. We do not look down on community college coursework. It will be factored in the same way – Penn State College of Medicine

Does your PA program accept prerequisites from Tri counties community college?

Yes, we will accept prerequisites from Tri C or other community colleges. – Case Western Reserve

Summary: Some schools do care if all of your prerequisites courses are taken at a community college, but the vast majority don’t. If you can, it is best to research your preferred PA school’s website and contact the program admission team.

2. Do PA School Prerequisite Classes Expire?

I would like to know if the prereq classes taken in undergrad in 2003 would be considered in factoring GPA or should I retake them. I can try to retake some at a university, but because of my financial situation, I can only afford community college courses. Will this be ok? Thanks

Courses you have taken do not expire for us. We will use your coursework from 2003 in our transcript review to determine which prerequisites are fulfilled. – Yale University

I completed my science classes in 2008, should I retake them?

If you’ve been working in healthcare full-time since graduating we would waive that requirement – Penn State College of Medicine

Do you accept a three-credit Humanities course if it was taken six years ago in 2011?

Yes, we will accept humanities credits that are older than 5 years. Only science credits must be taken within 5 years. – Touro University

My question is whether or not classes taken during undergrad “expire?” I graduated with a B.S in Biology in 2013 but started college in 2006. I was in the Air Force, so my undergrad took a long time to complete. As it stands, I am currently living as an Air Force dependent in Germany with my spouse while they finish their 4-year tour. I will not be applying to PA school for another three years. I was wondering since I will have been out of school for six years when I apply, will this hurt my application? I don’t know if the time since my classes were taken, will work against me?

The courses that “time out” are Anatomy and Physiology. That course series must be completed within 5 years of matriculation so you may need to refresh those courses. – Carroll University

I am a medical graduate from India applying for PA program. When you talk about GPA, is it the GPA of the prerequisite courses or the bachelor’s degree too? I received my bachelors in 1995 and have completed the prerequisites in the past two years. So which one counts more towards selection process?

The prereqs which must be completed within 10 years of applying count towards the selection process so we wouldn’t look at your 1995 coursework at all actually. – Case Western Reserve

I have a biology degree but graduated in 2002, are there any courses that your program wants to be more recent?

All of the prerequisites have to be completed within 10 years of applying to our program.  – Case Western Reserve

Do classes have an expiration date? Also, can I repeat some of the undergrad courses at a community college?

College credits do not expire. I only suggest retaking if you did very poorly in a prereq. Some students will take refresher courses or upper-level science to get back into “student mode” but remember, community college credits are not as rigorous as 4-year university credits. – A.T. Still University

I graduated with a BS in 2011, taking some core science classes in 2007. Since graduating, I have been working as a certified medical assistant and now working with CHC on the central coast. Would I need to retake the core classes?

No need to retake the prereqs. Having them completed more than 5 years ago is not ideal, but you have more recent coursework and clinical/volunteering to make up for it. So I suggest not worrying about retaking any courses unless you earned a C or below in one. – A.T. Still University

Summary: There is a surprisingly large amount of variation here between schools. Some schools do not have an expiration date on courses while others require all course be completed within a 10-year window and some require 5-year’s for certain courses and no expiration on others. This could open (or close) a lot of doors depending on when you completed your prerequisite coursework. Take home message: Do your research before you apply!

3. Can I Apply With Coursework in Progress?

I had taken Anatomy and Physiology (separate and both with their respective labs) over seven years ago. I will be retaking these courses next spring. Can I still apply during the upcoming cycle?

Yes, you can apply with coursework in progress, you would list it as either in progress or planned on the application. – A.T. Still University

Can I take biochemistry after submitting my application? If so, does not having taken this class reflect negatively on my application?

You can have three outstanding prerequisites at the time of application. You must show your plan to complete the courses prior to entering the program. It will not reflect poorly if you have not yet completed biochemistry – Butler University

Genetics is the only prerequisite I have not taken. Could my application still be reviewed considering I have additional classes that offer a more holistic approach to the medical field?

You can apply with one outstanding prerequisite (Genetics), however, if accepted you will need to prove you took the course by December 31st and passed with a B or better. – Yale University

Many programs only allow non-science courses to be “in progress.” Should I be worried that my Biochem will still be in progress when I apply? Should I wait to apply?

No more than two prerequisites can be outstanding at the time of application and they need to be done by the fall of the application year. – Case Western Reserve

Summary: The best bet is to try to have all your prerequisite coursework completed before you apply. If not, you better check with the PA program ADCOM, that being said, most schools allow one or two prerequisite courses to be outstanding at the time of application.

4. Do My Prerequisite Courses Fulfill The Requirements?

What do you accept for the human anatomy prerequisites? I attended Penn State University, where I have taken Biology 129, titled Mammalian Anatomy. I have also taken Biology 497, a human cadaver dissection course and I use the dissected cadavers to teach my section of the Biology 129 lab. So, the Biology 129 course is called Mammalian Anatomy, but it is primarily human-focused. Will these courses be sufficient for the human anatomy prerequisite? And if so, should I match both of them on the CASPA application?

Sometimes those need approval by our PA Chair on a case by case basis so if you have a question about a particular class I would email the chair and include a complete course description (and syllabus if you have it) so we can run that by the chair to get approval for you. – A.T. Still University

I have a question about some wording on your website concerning your prerequisite coursework. Per your website, the prerequisite biology classes must be “at or above the 200 level.” I have completed two combined anatomy and physiology courses with labs which are on par with what is usually required to apply. However, at my school, these were not listed as being at the “200 level”. Could you give any more information on this pre-requisite expectation?

We will look at your transcripts and if your courses are listed at the 200 level or higher in a biology related course then the course will count as fulfilling a prerequisite. – Butler University

Is it possible to substitute organic chemistry with biochemistry for the prerequisites?

We are not able to substitute Biochem for Organic Chem – Duke University

For the 2-semester psychology requirement, will neuroscience count? It is listed under the psychology department at my undergraduate university.

Neuroscience offered through your psychology departement will be accepted as one of the two psychology prereqs. – Carroll University

I was wondering if students that are applying would be able to designate which courses they would like used as prerequisites such as the choice between organic chemistry and biochemistry. Will the course with a higher grade automatically be used?

When you are asked to complete our secondary application, you will identify which courses you believe best satisfy our pre-requisites. We then verify these courses across your entire transcript. So my advice would be to best align your course with our course not necessarily take a course less appropriate just because it received a higher grade. As for OChem vs. Biochem – it absolutely is your choice – we require either – or….not both.  – Penn State College of Medicine

Could you please let me know the equivalent courses for biochemistry and organic chemistry or the course numbers?

The program does not endorse any one course or university/college at which to take prerequisite courses. We do accept either undergraduate or graduate level courses for biochem and organic but they must be separate courses and they must be specific to biochem and organic, not overview courses that combine lots of different topics. – Case Western Reserve

What are your thoughts on having endocrinology as an upper-level bio class compared to some of the other upper-level bio courses?

While endocrinology is not a prerequisite for Yale, certainly any upper-level biology courses will only help enhance your application and prepare you for a rigorous curriculum in a PA Program. – Yale University

Summary: Tap into your college and university academic advisor and make a plan. When I was in college I followed a pre-med track through my junior year until I discovered PA school. I met with my academic advisor who suggested I pursue a Zoology degree so that I could meet my genetics, microbiology, and anatomy/physiology prerequisites. I suggest you create a spreadsheet ( here is one I have started for you ) and compare prerequisite coursework across programs. When you meet with your advisor you can formulate your attack plan. If there are uncertainties, as I will say a million times, contact a couple PA programs and fill the gaps with knowledge!

5. Do You Accept Online Prerequisite Coursework?

I live in a small town where there is a private university and a community college. I still need to take couple prereqs and was thinking of taking them through UNE online courses, because the school in my town is so much more expensive than UNE. Would the UNE online courses be accepted as a prereq?

Online courses count as long as they are taken at a regionally accredited institution – Duke University

Can we take prerequisite courses online and attached lab on the campus?

Our requirement is that all prerequisite courses with labs must be taken “on ground.” – Case Western Reserve

Summary: Be careful with online courses, while many schools accept online classes, some school require that courses be taken on site. Again best to check before you decide to pursue an online degree.

6. Is There a Minimum GPA for Prerequisite Coursework?

If I have a C in one of my prerequisites, but my overall prerequisite GPA is a B would you suggest I retake that course?

It is difficult to say if you should retake the prerequisite, certainly the higher the better for your prerequisite GPA, so it may be to your benefit. – Yale University

So, your guys’ pre-requisite courses do not necessarily expire, but all prereqs must be met with a grade of a B?

The prerequisites do not have a grade minimum, but we calculate an overall prerequisite GPA.  If you are admitted to the program and have one outstanding course, you must complete the course by December 31st and earn a grade of B or better. – Yale University

Do you require all prereqs to be completed with a B or higher, or does your cumulative GPA just need to be a 3.0 or higher?

Your cumulative needs to be a 3.0 or higher. – Case Western Reserve

Summary: GPA requirements are the bane of many well-intended pre-PAs existences. It was definitely mine, and it is the one area where schools vary across the spectrum on requirements. I suggest you use a combination of tools starting with my paschoolfinder.com PA program match tool (where you can sort schools by overall and science GPA requirements) along with the PAEA Program Directory . Unless you have an overall and science GPA of 3.4 it is best to do your homework. If you are applying with a low GPA read this post to see what the ADCOMs have to say.

7. Do You Accept Prerequisite Courses Completed at Different Colleges?

I took Anatomy and Physiology 1 at one school and Anatomy and Physiology 2 at another. Will this affect my application?

No this does not impact your application from our standpoint – Penn State College of Medicine

Summary: Most schools just want to see that you have completed your prerequisites and maintained a relatively high standard. Having completed your prerequisites at different schools isn’t a big deal. If you have been to five different colleges in four years you may have some explaining to do but otherwise, in the words of Bobby McFerrin ” Don’t Worry Be Happy . “

8. Is Lab Required?

I noticed one of the prereqs is a physiology with a lab. How important is having this lab requirement? I have taken physiology without a lab and multiple anatomy classes with labs. I am also having trouble finding physiology lab classes to take separately.

Physiology lab is indeed a basic pre-requisite. We are strict about that. – Case Western Reserve

Summary: If the requirement says “lab” well then, you better have the lab. Most biology, physics, chemistry and anatomy/physiology courses have this as part of the course. This is not where you want to cut corners.

9 How About Repeat Courses?

Does repeated college courses give a bad impression of a student?

It depends on how many and what the trajectory of your studies look like.. Everyone has rough spots but the question is if its a pattern or if its an isolated instance with steady improvement thereafter. – Case Western Reserve

Summary: I think the admissions team at A.T Stills said it best in my post about applying to PA school with a low GPA : “We look for an upward trend in grades. We understand that some students have a hard transition to college, or they do not find focus until later. All of your grades will be averaged together, however, we still look for an upward trend. You do want to be somewhat close to the average GPA though. For example, if your total GPA is a 2.8, that is going to be hard to overcome. If it is a 3.0 or higher, with significant other experiences, we can work with that to an extent.”

10. Graduate or Undergraduate Courses?

Does your program factor graduate level work differently than undergraduate?

It does not.  – Case Western Reserve

Summary: CASPA calculates a GPA for your masters as well as undergrad coursework, schools look at both and take both into account. They are usually factored equally, but the trend (as always) matters.

11. Dropped Courses?

Do you take into account if you dropped a class then ended up retaking it later on? Will it essentially effect the application in any way?

We do consider if an applicant dropped a class and retook it later.  – Case Western Reserve

Summary: Of course schools will factor in dropped courses, they are looking for candidates who can handle the rigors of an intensive 2-3 year program. So you need to be careful here. If you drop a course and retake it scoring a 3.7 it isn’t going to look so bad. But lots of dropped course without good reason will not reflect highly.

Highlights and Summary

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly of CNA Classes

  • Facebook
  • Twitter

Training and working as a CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) is a unique opportunity that will allow you to see the true nature of the medical field. There can times of great pride and joy as a CNA, but you have to keep in mind that it is no easy task. If you feel that you may have what it takes, read on to see what you can expect from your CNA classes and training .

The Good

With the proper certification, training, and experience work as a CNA is one of the most secure job markets out there. There will always be a need for nursing assistants and there exists a wide range of possible career opportunities available to those with CNA training.

Many CNA classes offer flexible hours, or short training courses, in order to accommodate students. If you have a family life, another job, or are taking other classes, many CNA courses can be completed at a time or pace that suits you.

The Bad

Being a CNA can be a demanding job at times. There will always be those patients that get upset when you are trying to help them, but you must always remember what you are doing: helping them! They may not thank you, but you will feel better knowing that they are clean, comfortable and secure. Closely related to this, as well is the emotional nature of the job. As you work so closely with patients, however, there will be the chance that you will develop a close relationship and bond with those you treat. You will be thankful that you were able to make their lives that bit easier and more comfortable while you were with them, but the doesn’t mean it won’t be hard along the way. This is one of the most difficult and rewarding jobs you can take.

The Ugly

When you hear the term ‘nursing assistant’ there are a few images that may come to mind; some of which may not be pleasant. Working as CNA is not for those who are faint of heart. You will have a great deal of job satisfaction as a CNA, but you’ll have to deal with a few messes along the way. Everything in life comes at a cost, and one of the costs of becoming a CNA is seeing people at their worst. Bodily fluids, sadness from patients or their family, and high-pressure moments may occur on a regular basis. The work will be hard, and may not always be pretty, but there’s one thing we should never leave out. The impact you will make on your patients will be lifelong. While they may not remember you, you will always be able to appreciate that you helped someone for life.

The Best

If you are interested in pursuing a career in the medical profession, taking CNA classes can be an excellent way to learn about and understand all of the diverse areas of medical treatment and care. The work can be grueling, but the reward comes in two places. First, it comes from that fact that becoming a CNA includes a lot of job security and stability. Second, it comes from the fact that you’ve helped your patients along a difficult journey. You will have to take the good with the bad, and if you’re tough enough a career as a CNA can be more rewarding than anything else you would pursue.

5 Bad Habits to Avoid When Taking Online Classes

Online Degrees

There are a lot of advantages to taking classes online . While there may be occasions where you need to log in at a specific time to attend a lecture, do group work or watch a webinar, most of the time you can work on our classwork at any time of day. You get to work at your own pace. You don’t have to drive or walk to class. For many of us who juggle school and a full-time job, it’s a great way to get classwork to fit in your personal schedule. Yet along with these advantages, there are pitfalls. It can be easy to fall behind and more difficult to get help from your professor. When compared to a traditional classroom, it is just a different learning environment. There is less supervision and often less structure, which makes it easier to form bad habits – habits that could hinder your success in the class. Here are five bad habits to avoid when taking online classes .

1. Watching Television or Other Distractions While Studying

When you are physically in a class, there are others around you who are all paying attention (hopefully) to what the professor is teaching. Students are engaged and asking questions. Often in online classes, your classwork consists of reading or watching a lecture, and then writing and responding to discussion posts. It happens almost without you noticing it. You’re in your own personal space reading your class material. Then you quickly check your Facebook status or you have YouTube playing in the background or are catching up on the latest episode of your favorite show. Then your “class time” becomes a time suck. Suddenly your class material becomes the background. The studying that should have taken you an hour has now taken three hours and you really don’t remember what all of it was about. You wouldn’t bring Netflix or YouTube or Facebook into a conventional class, and you shouldn’t bring it into your virtual class either! Class time is class time.

2. Studying Whenever You Have the Time

The freedom that comes with being able to choose when you study can also be your downfall. You need to schedule and block out time each week for your class work. If you spend your week waiting for a free hour or two for study time to show itself, it’s never going to happen. If you don’t proactively schedule time, then likely you won’t have enough time to finish your work.

3. I’ll Just Log into the Class Once a Week

It’s important to remember that if you’re taking an online class, the only interaction you’ll have with your professor and other students is online. Login and check the information on your class at least once a day. You may find that the professor has added important information or changes to the classwork for that week or added clarification to something students didn’t understand. Make sure you know what is going on with your class.

4. I Didn’t Read the Syllabus

Remember that, since this is an online course, you will not have face time with your professor very often. The syllabus is an important part of an online course and you should refer to it regularly to make sure you are where you need to be in the course each week. It will tell you what you need to know and possibly even assignments you need to complete each week to stay caught up.

5. Discussion Posts are Dumb

Many online classes have a discussion board where you are asked to make posts and respond to posts each week on a particular topic. Often there is a stated minimum activity on the discussion board, such as a requirement to create one post on a particular topic or question and respond to two posts that other classmates have created. This is not a waste of time. It is the online equivalent of class discussion and class participation. It allows you to exchange ideas and questions with your classmates and gives the professor a way to assess how well you are grasping the material. It’s best to do more than the minimum suggested posts, so that you get the most out of your classroom participation time. For many online classes, participation in discussion posts is part of your grade for the class.

Online classes are convenient, and can be a great way to earn college credit. Avoiding these bad habits can help you be successful in your online class and help you avoid unnecessary stress.

Transcript of Multi-Paragraph Essay Review

Multi-Paragraph Essay Review
Step 1: The Introduction
A basic introduction contains three sentences. They are called the hook, background information, and the thesis.
The Thesis
The thesis can be written as a formula:
[Topic + verb + opinion] + "because" + List (subtopic 1 + subtopic 2 + subtopic 3)
Step 2: Body Paragraphs
Body paragraphs follow the "Write Tools" outline. You know:
1) Topic Sentence
2) Big idea
3) Tell me more (detail)
4) Tell me more (detail)
5) repeat steps 2-4
6) repeat steps 2-4
7) conclusion/transition
Step 3: Conclusion
A basic conclusion has two sentences:
1) Synthesized thesis
2) "So what?" or "What’s next?"
Step 4: Draft, Peer review, revise, and publish
This last step is just a continuation of the writing cycle.
topic+verb+opinion
This is called the claim. Its job in the thesis is to explain "what" a paper will talk about or explain.
"because"+list
This part of a thesis is called the plan. Its job is to tell the reader "how" a paper will explain the claim.
Synthesized Thesis
A synthesized thesis contains the main points from each of your body paragraphs. Basically, you are substituting the general statements of the list with details from your body paragraphs.
"So what?" Game
After reading your new synthesized thesis, ask yourself the question, "so what?" The answer to the question is your next sentence. You can also ask:
1) What’s next?
2) Who should care?
3) why is this important?

Jealousy is a powerful emotion that can lead to horrible circumstances. Sometimes, people are not even aware of what they are doing when they are doing it, but their emotions take over and make them do terrible things. In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, jealousy and revenge take hold of young Abigail Williams causing her to wreak havoc on an entire town. Ultimately, it is Abigail’s actions that result in the witch trials and the killing of many innocent people.

    Example of Body Paragraph
In Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Harry is a champion to many of the more insecure students at Hogwarts. For example, when Malfoy takes Neville’s Rememberall, Harry gets on a broom and gets it back. He simply cannot stand someone who picks on others. Because of this, Harry becomes a hero to those less fortunate. In other words, he has found a place where he belongs, and he becomes determined to protect the vulnerable people he has grown fond of.

    10

Writing a Conclusion Like Intro., just three to five sentences
All CM; no CD Do NOT repeat your thesis statement or introductory paragraph, RESTATE it using different words. Reflect what your essay said & provide closure, moving this time from specific to general. Try to relate your thesis to the world at large. Do NOT add any new information!

One way to do this is by using transitions – words or phrases or techniques that help bring two ideas together. Transitional words and phrases represent one way of gaining coherence.

    14

    What Is a Literary Essay?

A literary analysis essay is an academic assignment that examines and evaluates a work of literature or a given aspect of a specific literary piece. It tells about the big idea or theme of a book you’ve read. The literary essay may be about any book or any literary topic imaginable.

How to Write a Literary Analysis Essay

When you’re taking a literature course , you clearly expect some degree of academic writing to be involved. You’ll be reading books, and you’ll be discussing them in class. However, you’ll also analyze those books in written.

There’s a problem: your professors assign you the books and they ask you to write the paper, but they don’t teach you how to write a literary essay step by step. Some students assume they can find some reviews on Goodreads and paraphrase them. Others go through blogs maintained by passionate readers, and they assume that that’s the style they should follow.

This type of paper needs a specific format. Plus, you’ll have to maintain an adequate style of academic writing. You can’t write like a blogger would write, and you cannot copy Goodreads or Amazon reviews. What you should do is read that book and write a proper literary essay that would leave your professor impressed.

Are there any guidelines you can follow to achieve that goal? Of course there are! In the most basic form, these are the steps you should follow:

    • Understand the purpose of a literary analysis;
    • Understand the format (learn what this type of assignment must include in its content);
    • Plan
    • Write
    • Edit

Sounds pretty simple, doesn’t it? As any other student, you need more tangible guidelines that teach you how to handle this particular assignment. As always, we’re here to help with that! Read through this step-by-step guide, and you’ll be ready to start writing the literary analysis by the end of the day.

What Is the Purpose of a Literary Analysis Essay?

The main purpose of a literary analysis essay is to prove that you’ve carefully examined and evaluated a work of literature from various aspects. First of all, you must understand the term analysis. It means breaking something up to its essential components, and analyzing how their features contribute towards the overall impression.

Let’s take an example: you’re analyzing Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. It’s a highly popular book with countless reviews all over the Internet. If you check out those reviews, you’ll notice they are highly personal. They are all about the way the reader perceived the book. You’re allowed to share your own impressions in a literary analysis, but they have to be part of a more structured format. Most of all, you’ll focus on the analysis of all components of the book.

You’ll be reading the book differently, too. When you’re reading for pleasure, you’re mainly focused on emotions and visualizations of the scenes and characters. You’ll still pay attention to those elements of the reading process, but you’ll also be analytical towards the book. You’ll consider these elements:

    • Subject
    • Form
    • Style
    • Main theme
    • The relationship between form and content
    • The relationship between the main plot and the subplot
    • Characters’ strengths and flaws
    • Storyline strengths and flaws

In most cases, professors ask you to focus on one aspect analyzing a book. For example, they will ask you to analyze the strengths and flaws of Gatsby’s character. An overall analysis is a much larger and more complex paper, whose structure is closer to a research paper than it is to an essay.

    So let’s sum up:

    • The purpose of a literary analysis is to analyze a particular theme or aspect of the book or poem you’ve read.
    • Your writing will be sharp and focused. You will express not only your personal thoughts and emotions regarding the piece, but your studious approach towards it as well.
    • Think of it this way: you’re putting yourself in the shoes of a literary critic. If you’ve ever read the critiques in popular magazines, you’ll notice they are objective; not personal. Your essay will have a specific format, but it will maintain that critical approach you’ve seen from real critics.
    • Your goal is to convince the reader that you’re making a valid point with your analysis.

What Must a Literary Analysis Essay Include?

When students don’t know how to write a literary essay, they make a common mistake: freewriting. This assignment is not based on freewriting, where you sit and write whatever comes to mind regarding the book. The paper must be organized, and it needs specific elements that will turn freewriting into an actual literary analysis:

    • A specific topic, which you’ll formulate in accordance with the central idea you want to convey.
    • A central thesis statement, which tells the reader what to expect from the rest of the paper. This is a very clear declarative sentence that conveys the main point of your essay. Every single sentence you write in your literary analysis will be directly connected to this central idea.
    • An introduction, body, and conclusion – that’s the basic structure to maintain in most formats of academic writing. The literary analysis is no different; it needs an intro, body, and conclusion. The only difference is that you’re not obliged to stick to the 5-paragraph format. If you need more paragraphs in the body, you’re free to include them unless your professor tells you otherwise.

How to Write a Literary Analysis Essay Introduction

Now that you’re aware of all elements this essay should include, it’s easier for you to write the literary essay outline. It should briefly describe the points you’re going to include in the introduction, body, and conclusion. Once you have the outline ready, it will be easier for you to start writing the paper.

How do you start? That’s the greatest challenge to overcome throughout this process.

In the introduction, it’s important to capture the interest of your reader. You will do that by bringing immediate focus to the main point you’re going to make. Explain the reader (your professor) what aspect of the book or poem you’re going to analyze. Is it the format, a specific character, or an element of the plot?

    • You may start with a quote that conveys this main point for you. If, for example, you’re analyzing Gatsby’s character, you may include this quote:

“If personality is an unbroken series of successful gestures, then there was something gorgeous about him, some heightened sensitivity to the promises of life, as if he were related to one of those intricate machines that register earthquakes ten thousand miles away. This responsiveness had nothing to do with that flabby impressionability which is dignified under the name of the ‘creative temperament’ – it was an extraordinary gift for hope, a romantic readiness such as I have never found in any other person and which is not likely I shall ever find again.”

With this quote, the author practically expressed Gatsby’s personality, so you have where to start from. From here on, you’ll analyze the character’s personality in different scenes and you’ll describe how they are related to the description from this quote.

    • It’s also allowed for you to include some background information relevant to the literature genre or to the author of the piece you’re analyzing.
    • At the end of the introduction, you’ll include your thesis statement. It’s recommended for it to be in a single sentence. That rule will push you towards clarity and scarcity.

Once you have the introduction with a clear thesis statement, it won’t be that difficult for you to write the body of your paper. You don’t necessarily have to write three paragraphs in it, but it’s the minimum number of paragraphs for an essay of 500 – 700 words. You may separate the body in more paragraphs, but less than three would make the paper look like a bulky and overwhelming read.

Each paragraph needs a topic sentence, which is directly related to the thesis statement.

How to End a Literary Analysis Essay

Naturally, your literary analysis needs a strong, convincing conclusion. This final paragraph will make the essay complete and well-rounded. It will give the reader an impression that you made a clear point that they are ready to agree or disagree with.

How do you write such a conclusion?

    • Don’t introduce new points of discussion in the conclusion.
    • It should summarize and restate the main points you made, but it mustn’t be repetitive. You may make a relevant comment from a different perspective, or restate the main thesis to show how your arguments proved it.

    Conclusion

The literary analysis is not an easy essay to write. They say that the best critics are geniuses. They know how to penetrate deep into the essence of the book they read, and understand the author’s intentions for each element of their writing.

No one expects a college student to achieve that level of literary criticism, but the least you can do is try. If you follow the tips above, you can start writing the literary analysis essay as soon as you’re done with the reading.

What is a literary essay and why do we need it?

Often a college piece of writing needs to deal with some piece of literary work – a play, a novel, French poetry and so on. Your ability to analyze and assess pieces of literary writing can be directly addressed in such tasks by your professor. It is a very frequent task for students of many humanitarian faculties, but even a technical syllabus may contain an art history paper or a literary analysis essay that you may have to deal with, even if you don’t have any special skills in writing and have never written any type of essay before.

What is a literary essay and why do we need it?

So what is a literary analysis essay? The basic definition is: it is a piece of writing, measuring around 250-300 words (but otherwise may be specified by your teacher or professor, so make sure to check the requirements) that analyzes a literary work. It may analyze each and every aspect of, say, a novel: the style, the contribution to the literature in general, reflection of the author’s biography in the essay, the plot, the literary language and so on. Or, alternatively, it may focus on one of a few aspects which have just been mentioned. The idea of a literary essay is very close to how to write an article critique . However, the object of your critical analysis will not be an article, but a literary work.

How to approach your literary essay?

Before writing any literary essay, you will need to read the literary work that has been given to you for analysis. You may try reading shorter versions of it, specifically designed to help students tackle their literature tasks in shorter spans of time. Select characters and plot pieces that seem the most important to you and read more general information about the style and form of literary composition that you are going to write about, like prose, poetry, drama. All of them have their distinctive features and you may need to analyze them globally in order to cope with your literary essay task better. Always remember that any literary piece must be analyzed in a many-sided way, from every angle there is. Also, a good idea would be to collect relevant quotes from the literary work while reading, because then you’ll be able to refer to these or mention them in your essay, even quoting straight away. Anyways, you will need to come back to the text of the novel or poem several times while writing, because the focus of your essay may change and may need adjustments as you proceed.

The plan for developing the text of your essay includes the following stages:

    • decide how many paragraphs you want to have
    • decide how many main points will sufficiently cover the task given
    • plan your essay
    • produce the writing part
    • check and proofread your essay

The number of paragraphs mostly depends on the tasks you’ve been given. Several tasks may require several paragraphs: for instance, one paragraph for style features of the novel, one for the plotline and its analysis, one for the main characters, one for your own opinion (in case you’ve been asked to give any). The introduction and the conclusion are mandatory parts or any written work, so if you add up everything, you will get a decent essay outline which we can see in almost any literary analysis essay example. When I need someone to write my paper , I usually contact writing services and ask them for any relevant examples or pay them for writing a literary analysis essay for me.

    Writing a literary essay

When you’re done planning, the next logical step would be to try to produce a continuous text on the given assignment. Some students experience difficulty with beginning their essay, because words just seem to be missing and they can’t come up with any decent ideas, but that’s what planning is actually for: you can start with any part you want, and finish with the hardest one. If you already know what you want to write in any of the paragraphs you have planned, it’s ok to go there right away and just write what you know best. As you can see in a sample book report , the style of your essay needs to be pretty formal. You are writing to your teacher, and it is an official document, so avoid any informal language, much personal information or any exclamatory punctuation.

Formally, a literary essay should contain information about the parts of a literary work and the general structure of the text, the form and the style it was written in. It is a good idea to mention the specificity of the language which the author used in the original, and the specific features of his author’s style (because, as we know, each author has their own unique way of conceiving their literary work, which may add value to the literary piece you’re analyzing). To get a better idea about the value of his work, get acquainted with the artistic styles and the characteristic features of the époque which the writer represents, in this way you will be able to understand it better and also make more points about how successful his work was. Always analyze the plot not only from the position of being interesting or intriguing, but from the position of the underlying philosophical message as well. Every great book has multiple hidden subtexts, and everybody perceives them at their own level. Make sure you do your best to identify those points and dwell upon them. And finally, express your opinion about the text in a subtle manner. Don’t claim you know everything and that your opinion is the ultimate truth. Always mention what other opinions exist about this literary piece and why you may be wrong, however, use factual information from the text to prove your points. And, of course, don’t be afraid to ask for help. If you need help with your literary essay, Digital Photography homework help or 3D Art homework help , you can always address the services that will gladly help you out.

Wonderful creative course based on expression. It is more a general information course to inspire you and opening you up to the freedom of creative expression. This is not art theory or how to draw kind of course but does show you how to explore art. Definitely worth doing.

Good course. Amazing how much it covers. I noticed som negative comments from a minority of people who signed up for the course. They are forgetting one fact in my opinion. That is, this is an introductory class for begginers. One sentece the instructor mentioned in module 1: " you need to be Patient, Persistent and to PRACTICE.." I also noticed that are all start with capital P. So give em a break and be positive. This also starts with a "P"

Easy to follow and friendly course. I love how Mr. Jusri makes you feel comfortable and wants you to understand very complicated topics in art and design in a very enjoyable way. This is a course for beginners as mentioned. I hope to see soon part 2, 3 and even 4.

What is Easy Peasy All-in-One Homeschool?

We exist to help families homeschool. We enable families to homeschool who thought they couldn’t because of a lack of finances, a lack of time, or a lack of know-how. Others join EP just because it’s easy and fun and they’re confident of the quality of education. EP seeks to free families from the burden of pursuing the “perfect” and encourages them to let it be “enough.” Each family and each child is different and we seek to provide the resources to enable your family to be who you were meant to be.

In 2011, I (Lee Giles) began putting my children’s assignments online so that they could work independently and so that I had the assignments saved for their younger siblings. I also wrote it from the beginning to be able to be used by other families. EP grade levels and individual courses include 180 days of homeschool lessons and assignments. It covers reading, writing, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, math, history/social studies/geography, science, Spanish, Bible, computer, music, art, PE/health, and logic. It uses only free materials found on the internet.

This site holds preschool (getting ready 1), kindergarten (getting ready 2), and first through eighth. (We have a separate high school site .) Grade levels include all of the English, math, computer and logic. The other subjects are combined into “program years” so that all of your children can study the same topic at the same time. Year 1’s theme is ancient history and biology. Year 2 has early American history and zoology for the theme. Year 3 is earth science and geography and cultures as  the theme. Year 4’s theme is modern history, physics and chemistry.

Your child just goes to Day 1 on his or her level (found in the sidebar) and starts clicking through the assignments! That’s all!

And yes, it’s all free. You’ll need paper, pencil, etc. and some minor supplies if you choose to do the experiments and art projects, but all of the reading materials, etc. are all free and online. We do offer offline courses for math, reading, and language arts, which you can find in our store.

My hope is to enable families to continue homeschooling no matter their life circumstances. A sister site, All-in-One Highschool , holds the high school courses.

You can read more about the curriculum on the  About  and  How To  pages. You can also see if your questions have been answered on the FAQ page.

Note: EP is not an online school. We are a homeschool resource. Your home is the school! You are the administrator. We’re just here to help you on your way.

I no longer sell t-shirts that I buy in bulk and ship from home. Twice a year I plan on doing a shirt sale where you can order your shirt directly and they will ship it to you. The shirts will arrive mid November.

I tried something different this time and am not doing our traditional t-shirt. We will likely have those again in the spring. I chose a long-sleeve shirt and pulled the EP out of our logo, for a simple, muted look. If you like it, maybe it would make a great Christmas present for your favorite EP kids.

They are available only during the month of October, until October 30th.

I told you around this time last year that my family was getting a Habitat for Humanity house, an ADA compliant house that my son in a wheelchair would be able to get around in. Well, it turns out we’re not. When we applied, we told them that we would only qualify financially for eighteen months. They obviously accepted us knowing that. Their program was eighteen months and it all seemed to align perfectly. My husband was in an eighteen-month master’s degree program. Afterwards, he would be working. He would earn more money and push us over the edge of the low-income limit placed on families to qualify for a house.

We were told last year that we shouldn’t plan on our house taking the full eighteen months because they were “getting houses done in a year.” Why they would say that to us when it was so obviously untrue, I have no idea. Even this spring we were told the house would likely be complete this summer because a contractor was going to do it and could get it done within three months.

After hearing nothing all summer and Habitat not calling our required quarterly meeting (again), my husband called a meeting to find out what was going on. He was told that next September was the earliest possible that the house could be done.

When my husband’s final course is finished in December, he’s not going to refrain from working more so we can stay poor enough to qualify for a home. I’m sure you can support us in that decision!

Of course, that doesn’t all of a sudden give us enough money to buy a house; even if it did, there’s no such house on the market. We were going to be getting a brand-new one-level home with four bedrooms, ADA compliant, and something that really excited me – solar panels. It was going to cost around $100,000 for us which we could pay interest free.

We have no debt, so an interest-free mortgage felt much better to us than a traditional one. Still, we were planning to pay it off as fast as possible, though we recently learned that Habitat would own part of the equity on our home for 30 years. We didn’t like knowing it wouldn’t really be ours.

Our current home is my childhood home, which growing up housed just four people, now it holds ten. We live with my parents. The house is on three floors and the changes in flooring between rooms and the cramped space make it so my son in a wheelchair can’t go more than a few feet before he needs help. His special toilet is in the basement (just over a bucket), so he can’t get to the bathroom on his own.

Because my son gets no practice at home getting himself around (he’s working on learning to use a walker), we send him to school. He went to a reverse-mainstream preschool, and now he goes to a mainstream kindergarten class. Thankfully, we’re in a top school district. He gets therapies several days a week at school, but we of course desire to have him home. We were planning to start homeschooling him once we moved into that Habitat house that’s now not going to happen.

So, in some ways my heart is broken. I’ve wanted my own home for the last twenty years. It’s something I had to give up to serve overseas. But now I want it for my child. He wants to chase his brothers around. He can’t. If we had the space, he’d be able to follow them around in his wheelchair. Right now, he’s carried around the house mostly. Obviously, that’s not sustainable.

At the same time, this is a great place to be, reliant on nothing but the grace of God.

Here’s a letter I received in my inbox.

                            July 7, 2018

                            Good Morning Lee,

First of all, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Debbie Lucas and just last year I retired after more than 30 years in education. Most recently, I served for 20 years as a Christian school administrator. Upon my retirement, my family and I made the decision that my oldest daughter and I would homeschool my five amazing grandchildren who had all been attending the Christian school where I worked.
We started our year using the Charlotte Mason approach and loved much about it, but as an educator, there seemed to be some things missing. Almost daily I was researching for the right curriculum or curriculums that would meet the needs our little homeschool group we call Arrow Christian Academy. One evening I came across Cathy Duffy’s review of Easy Peasy and I began implementing some pieces in our daily routine. The kids absolutely loved the variety and their ability to move along at their pace and my daughter and I loved the structure and ease of planning.
Your curriculum not only makes homeschooling affordable, but the excellence with which you have put together the daily lessons makes it one of the very best I have ever seen. Educationally, your curriculum is sound and very rigorous, while at the same time attainable for all children. I would like to commend you for the time and effort you have invested in developing All In One Homeschool. You have truly done what most would think impossible, but that’s how our God works when we follow Him. Our plan is to use your full curriculum this year with a first grader, third grader, fourth grader and two fifth graders. I can’t wait to see how our little bunch will grow!
Thank you for blessing so many with so much. I know you have followed the Lord sacrificially and we are most grateful for all you have done and continue to do on behalf of homeschool families.
May God richly bless you and your family as you continue to serve and follow him.
                            Truly Grateful,
                            Debbie Lucas

                            What’s New on the Site?

Easy Peasy All-in-One Homeschool 4 Comments
We released Language Arts 5 without any fanfare. There have been several things that have been added to the site that I want to let you know about.

Tomorrow I’ll be doing this as a live announcement on my Facebook page and then will open it up for questions about it all. That will be Tuesday, May 1st, at 1pm EST.

I want to let you know that LA 5 is released but also that there is something different about it. Do you notice something different about the title of this book?
                            LAPG

It’s called a lesson guide, not a parent’s guide. We have made both the math and language arts for level 5 for the students to use independently. That’s a change from the other levels.

All workbooks were made to be used along with the online course or with the guide. For instance, Language Arts 5 has several readings in their lesson guide that they will need. Also, the LA 5 workbook does not have 180 pages. When they work on a big paper over several days, I suggest they type it. Any little writing assignments that are to be done just that day do have a page in the workbook.

We now have book bundles. You can buy everything for a level with one button, all the reading, writing, and math. Each bundle comes with a free book. It’s cheaper than ordering them all on Amazon with Prime, not to mention much faster and easier.

The information is up on our site about Spanish and ESL classes this fall. The who, what, where, when, why, and how is all there on the Language Live!  page. I will open registration this summer. If you want to be notified first when that happens, get on our mailing list from the Language Live! page and check the box saying you are interested in those classes.

An essay-writing company has had its adverts banned after they were deemed to be misleading to students.

The Advertising Standards Authority ruled that UK Essays had failed to make it clear that the papers were not meant to be submitted as students’ own work.

The online ad also gave a “misleading impression” that the firm had received positive press coverage, the ASA said.

UK Essays said it would ensure its fair usage policy was more prominent within the website.

A website for ukessays.com featured text that stated “guaranteed grade, every time. We’re so confident you’ll love the work we produce, we guarantee the final grade of the work.

“Unlike others, if your work doesn’t meet our exacting standards, you can claim a full refund… loved by customers & the global press UK Essays have lots of press coverage from all over the world confirming that a 2:1 piece of work produced by us met this standard… We were the first company in the world to offer you guaranteed 2:1 and 1st class work”.

Extra information about the service was included on pages entitled World Class Guarantees and UK Essays in the Press, the ASA ruling explained.

A complaint was brought by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA), a universities watchdog, which argued that the ad was misleading because it did not make clear the risks associated with submitting bought essays.

It also said that references to the press coverage UK Essays received implied that they had had positive coverage or endorsement from these media outlets.

Upholding the complaint, the ASA said: “We considered the ad gave an overall impression that consumers would be able to submit the purchased essays as their own, particularly because of the anti-plagiarism and grade guarantees.

“We considered that consumers would understand from the website that they could purchase an essay of a particular grade that was plagiarism-free, and that they would be able to make a claim under the refund guarantee if they submitted the essay and did not receive the grade ordered, or if the essay was found to be plagiarised.”

It added: “Because we considered consumers would expect from the ad that they could submit purchased essays as their own that would meet the ordered grade without risks, which was not the case, we concluded that the ad was misleading.”

In February last year, the then Universities Minister Jo Johnson urged university and student bodies to do more to deal with the spread of what he called “essay mills”.

                                    ‘Respect the decision’

A spokesman for UK Essays said: “While we are disappointed with the ASA ruling, we respect the decision and we look to ensure that our fair usage policy is more prominent within the site.

“We pride ourselves on the quality of work we produce, but ultimately, we are happy to work within the provided guidelines.

“We are committed to working closely with any educational institution who are happy to work with us and create open working relations going forward.

“Our desire is to become the word’s leading educational support service and we firmly believe that working closely with universities and educational bodies all over the world we can achieve this.”

Welcoming the ASA’s ruling, QAA’s director of academic standards Ian Kimber, said: “Essay mills mislead students and put their academic and professional careers at risk.

“This landmark ruling by the ASA is the first successful challenge to their claims of legitimacy, exposing their cynical use of anti-plagiarism disclaimers and exploitative media referencing.

“We will continue to campaign for academic integrity, supporting both students and higher education providers in identifying and tackling cheating and other abuses.

“This case helps to spread the message that cheating, in any form, is unacceptable.”
